Escape the heat and bring the kids along for a special one-night only engagement with The Striking Viking Story Pirates on Saturday, July 11th. Aurora Picture Show will present a special film screening at 7 p.m. in the Children’s Museum of Houston located at 1500 Binz, and will welcome the Story Pirates for a Q&A following the series of short films.

The New York-based Striking Viking Story Pirates adapt and perform stories written by kids as a way of celebrating the words and ideas of young people, promoting literacy as a vital part of early childhood education, and preserving the spark of youthful creativity often lost in the transition to adulthood.

For the screening at the Children’s Museum, the Striking Viking Story Pirates will present videos of kids’ stories that they have produced recently including “Tickle Monsters.” They will be available afterwards to discuss their process and interact with the audience.

Founded in 2003 to promote a love of creative writing, the Striking Viking Story Pirates have collected words and ideas from children across the country and brought their stories to life on stage and on film. By focusing on the power of communication and self-expression, they give children the tools to become confident, literate students, and encourage kids to become more thoughtful and passionate writers and speakers— in and out of school.

The Striking Viking Story Pirates' website is storypirates.org.

Admission is $7 for Adults and $4 Kids under 12. Aurora Picture Show Members must RSVP to the office for free admission. Please visit Aurora Picture Show to purchase tickets online.

Houston has an incredible art community that is beyond just painting and drawing and also includes movement and sculpture! Join this highly imaginative and creative group in a Children's Museum of Houston group art extravaganza, Houston's Got Art Talent. Work with other visitors to create a community mobile sculpture that dangles and spins and create other large group sculptures!

The Children's Museum is specifically looking for local artists to volunteer their time. There is no cost to participate, just time and talent. The museum will provide all needed materials for the activities. If someone would like to do a specific demonstration CMH would more than welcome that as well. The volunteers can help all three days or just one.

Dates and times:

Tuesday, June 23: 11am to 4pm

Sunday, July 19: 1-5pm

Sunday, August 2: 1-5pm

All summer CMH will be highlighting different activities each day, and recruiting volunteers to share with young visitors what interests them or helps them create something on their own.

So come to the Children's Museum of Houston to feed your inner artist.

Artists can contact Jennifer Belt at (713) 535-7209 or jbelt@cmhouston.org
