CoffeeGeek Nathan Slabaugh, of Circus Coffee was in the middle of a motorcycle tour of the western US / Canada and happened to be in Vancouver for our first CoffeeGeek Lab Tasting - he's posted some photos:

CoffeeGeek The CoffeeGeek Lab and our first Tasting has a really nice review from Peter Van de Reep - I think this is the first time I've been the subject of a review (well first for the Lab at least!). The Tasting was especially cool because it came together so quick - basically 2 days' notice for most folks.

pullingshots.wordpress.com
Last weekend, a sizable group of coffeegeeks gathered in chief coffeegeek Mark Prince’s newly created lab space. Mark, not willing to pull a week long caffeine permahigh invited the locals over. Our mission was to taste a number of coffees from some of North America’s premiere roasters.

This year will also host the first ever Southeast Regional City vs City Throwdown. Special Guest MC and Latte Art Extraordinaire Chris "Defurious" Deferio will be showing off what has made him a multiple and current Millrock Latte Art champion!

Prizes are as follows:
First Place- A home brewing package featuring a Baratza Maestro grinder, Chemex, and Digital Scale. Also, a custom first place tamper.
Second Place- A Yama Siphon Brewer, a Digital Scale, and a custom second place tamper.
Third Place-Various package from Bellissimo, a year's subscription to Barista Magazine, coffee, and other goodies, as well as a custom third place tamper.

Let's not forget about the Bash! Open bar, grub, and the unstoppable and unbeatable DJ skills of former SE Regional Champ and amazing barista Lem Butler. We will be providing shuttles from and to the event for all needed.

This event is part of the BGA Southeast Regional Jam, and is sponsored by Dilworth Coffee, Carolina Espresso Services, Barista Magazine, Bellissimo Coffee InfoGroup, Coffeegeek.com, Torani, and Big Train.

(There is a $5 donation to enter the throwdown, which is going to charity.)

NB - this is not a "CoffeeGeek" Event; however, CoffeeGeek.com is a proud sponsor of this Jam. Please relate all questions and queries to Jason Dominy, organizer of this great event.

CoffeeGeek Thanks to everyone who attended the coffee tasting today - we had some great coffees, and it was a great communal affair. Loved seeing everyone getting into coffee conversations all over the Lab.

CoffeeGeek We're having our first (of what I hope will be monthly) CoffeeGeek Lab coffee tastings this Sunday!

Sorry for the short notice, it kind of came together very quick - but it'll be worth it! This event is also limited to the first twenty people to confirm as attending - so if you want to take part, RSVP as soon as you ca...n!

We have some great coffees from some quality roasters, including

- Counter Culture Coffee (North Carolina)
- PT's Coffee (Kansas)
- Doma Coffee (Idaho)
- Phil & Sebastian Coffee (Calgary)

The coffees will begin brewing at 2:45 and will be brewed by press pot and chemex methods, with an extra special coffee done on a siphon coffee maker.

There is no charge for this event (though we will be asking for nominal payments in the future for other events)

The event is held in Vancouver, at the CoffeeGeek Lab. The location is in Cambie Village, near West 17th and Cambie. All confirmed attendees will be notified of the address and directions. Again, this will be limited to the first 20 RSVPs, so sign on quick!

Time:2:30PM Sunday, November 8th
Location:West 17th and Cambie Area in Vancouver

Richard Stern

Richard Stern Thoughts please everyone:

I have a Ascaso Arc Fun espresso maker http://www.fairfaxcoffee.com/Items/Espresso-Coffee-Machines/Pump-Coffee-Machine/Ascaso/Ascaso-Arc-Fun-Espresso-Machine---Black.aspx. It's just started spewing water out of the front fascia rather than through the brew head. Therefore, i can't drink proper ...coffee, and have to have that cr@p that comes from a press pot *thing*. Ugh.

the unit is out of warranty, and this is now the second time it's broken :-(. first time was in warranty. i reckon it's going to cost at least a £100 to repair. Should i get it repaired, get a new machine instead, or get a different espresso maker. I don't want a pod type machine, and the unit must be able to froth milk.

Any help greatly appreciated.

cheers
ric

KerryChad Albright I need a cheap at home roaster that's not a glorified hot air pop corn popper. and QUIET any ideas? Or would it just be easier to throw the beans in the oven? never roasted at home or anywhere for that matter.

That won't work because one side will be burnt and the other raw. Also the chaff will remain stuck on it and may pose a fire hazard. Try a old school stove top popcorn popper. I used that for my first roaster and with practice it produced wonderful results. Just be sure to roast outdoors with whatever route you decide to go with. (massive smoke)
