The ban of the program at the elites is in its 40th year. Yet the students are hardly antimilitary. The opposite, in fact. Is it time to bring R.O.T.C. back?

University Parent Do you feel the same? RT @SherwoodLucy: My daughter & I are germophobes so it makes me nervous to bring home my flu-ridden college freshman.

University Parent Tough question from a parent - any tips? "My daughter's room mate has had her sister move into their dorm room. She has complained to the dorm's RA but all they have said is that she should work it out. My daughter is stressed, unable to study, and feeling badly about the situation. Is there anything else that can be done?"

My daughter had this same problem during freshman year, but with a boyfriend moving in. You have to be persistent with the administration. The RA can't do much. Go above her head to Resident Housing.

I agree, Resident Housing office is the way to go. Tell the administration that the cost of living in the dorm needs to be reduced since she now has to share her room three ways instead of two.

I work in a residence hall, as a Resident Director supervising RAs and coordinating all the functions and services of the hall. Going through the housing office may be frustrating because it may feel like they're sending you around to different people. The person you will more than likely end up talking with (and the person that you should go to ... Read Moredirectly) is the person in my position. Every school calls this position something different, but it's usually: resident director/coordinator, hall director/coordinator, community director/coordinator, etc. That person supervises the RA and is responsible for the building. Your daughter probably knows this person or at least who they are. Tell her to try to schedule a meeting with the resident director. They should be able to help her. Also, it's especially important to come from a place of wanting to help your daughter rather than a place of threats. In my experience, housing offices get tons of calls from parents every year, and those who are calm and concerned get much farther than those who start with threats. Most of us who have choosen to go into this profession want to help students have the best experience possible. We would much rather find ways to work with parents to help their kids than dodge threats. Best of luck, and I hope that helps!
