In the global fight against AIDS, the international community has brought access to lifesaving antiretroviral therapy (ART) to many health facilities around the world, but not all. Those lifesaving tablets that travel 10,000 miles sometimesdon’t make it far enough. ...

Lauren Stump I have been sponsoring a little girl from Ethiopia for several months now and I'm planning on sending her my first letter in December around Christmas time, along with a package. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the best presents to send her would be? And is there a limit to the size of the package? Also, what are the most understanding/appropriate topics for her that I should write in my letter?

We don't send packages, you can send money to Compassion to purchase gifts for your child. We only send things that are flat and fit in the envelope with the letter (stickers, coloring pages, pictures, etc.) nothing that will change the shape of the envelope. There should be more info on Compassion's website!

Brandy Schaefer I have been sponsoring an Ethiopian girl for several years. She turned 18 this year. I am just wondering how much longer I will be able to sponsor her. I am assuming children age out at some point. Anyone know?

They usually graduate the program between the ages of 18-22. If you call Compassion they should be able to give you more specific information about your girl.

I have been richly blessed by reading the stories from the recent bloggers trip to that country. Me and my boyfriend both sponsor children, and we've been wondering if anyone else has noticed that if you write a letter to your sponsored child and they write back, their letter bears no resemblance to your letter at all- no responses to questions you asked or anything. It's got to the point where we're wondering if ...the children are even getting to read these letters... has anyone else had this problem?Read More

Anne, I have seen that happen in some of the letters I've received from my child over the past several years of sponsorship. However, more of them DO have direct responses as time goes on. She also does directly mention my family members, never asks about my husband or kids (since I'm single... I once sent her a childhood photo so she'd know what I... Read More looked like as a kid, but apparently the translation or the cultural issue didn't go smoothly, so she thought they were my kids ... cleared the up the next letter and there's never been a miscommunication of that sort since).... I once also got nearly identical letters a few months apart and found out that it was a practice set because she hadn't received a letter from me (got held up somewhere?) in a little while and had nothing to go on.

I know it's hard to trust organizations these days, and I myself went through the horrorible series of "what-ifs" mid-way through my current sponsorship, but all those who have gotten to visit their kids and the Moody scholars and others attest to the truth of Compassion's work. When I finally meet my own child, I'm going to be able to experience it myself. It's possible that in some countries at some times, customs isn't letting certain packages through or the translations are going slowly --- but they do get the letters and the letters do mean everything.

Anne, another thing that I learned recently is that most of these countries are verbal/auditory countries, they do not understand the concept of letters/letter writing. So, as children they are learning how to communicate in writing. How a letter is set up, and sometimes things are suggested as choices of things that they can say in letters and ... Read Morethey don't always make the connections with our last letters. They do get our letters. Give them time, I have four children and they all write differently. One writes often, while the other three write less. Part of it is their personalities too.

The Browders Came to our church and we learned about Compassion from them. We have just signed up to sponsor a child from the Phillipines, Joshua Ysulan. My family is very excited that Jesus wants to work through us to reach out to children in this most critical time where there are so many spiritually lost. This is... a way that we can make sure that someone else has the opportunity to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ and can be given other forms of help. Thank you God for this ministry. Thank you God for Jesus!Read More
