Once again (or should it be 'as always') we disagree. This one actually evolved fairly logically (except for your Sodrel rant).

So what comments do you expect under three pictures of Baron shaking hands, speaking in public or doing usual politician schmoozing? I didn't mention, that looks like the square in Corydon - a location where I was ushered out of the location of his appearance when it became "only" for the Chamber of Commerce (thus beginning my career as a political activist (or terrorist).

The only thing the present toothless Senate bill will assist are the predatory for profit private health insurance companies being subsidized by the government with forced customers. We need the same type of health-care that most other civilized countries have (Canada & western Europe).

Baron Hill I know many of my constituents are in need of tax relief, and in particular, some relief on their property taxes. I’m very pleased that this property tax provision is included in the Tax Extenders Act. It is crucial that we continue to provide Americans the tools they need as our country works its way through these difficult economic times.

Will this make up for the tax increases due to Cap and Trade? As real science continues to disprove 'consensus science' one can only reflect on how the House was bullied and B.S'd into approving tax increases on your district. You were voted in to protect such abuses and to make good, sound judgements. .... Good job Baron.

What is the line-item veto and should President Obama have it?... See More
Posted by sanityinjection on March 4, 2009
http://sanityinjection.wordpress.com/2009/03/04/what-is-the-line-item-veto-and-should-president-obama-have-it/

"It is a truism in Washington that the same issues tend to come up year after year. In that vein, it’s not surprising that there is a new attempt brewing in Congress to give the President the line-item veto."

"Most readers know that the President has the ability to veto bills passed by Congress. However, this power becomes almost useless when it comes to the budget. No President wants to veto an entire huge budget bill, much of which he may agree with, over a number of things in it that he disagrees with. This gave rise to the idea of the “line-item veto”, which would give the President the ability to strike out individual items in the budget instead of having to veto the whole bill. As with a regular veto, Congress could still attempt to restore those items individually or collectively with a vote or votes to override the President’s veto."

"Although a number of state governors have this power with regard to their own state budgets, the idea of applying it on the federal level has been controversial. Congress has usually been opposed to the idea on the grounds that it violates the separation of powers which vests the budgetary power with the legislature, while Presidents, unsurprisingly, have generally been in favor of it. Fiscal conservatives have backed the idea because they feel it will allow a President to cut out some of the waste and pork that Congress pads the budget with."

[Emphasis] ---> "Finally, after the Republicans took over Congress in 1994, they succeeded in passing a law to give the President (Democrat Bill Clinton at the time) the line-item veto in 1996. Clinton was able to use this power for two years, and it is not a coincidence that the combination of a Republican Congress and a President with a line-item veto resulted in significant deficit reductions. Unfortunately, in 1998 the Supreme Court found the line-item veto law to be unconstitutional, agreeing that it violates the separation of powers."

"To get around this problem, the new line-item veto proposal, sponsored by Congressman Paul Ryan (R) and Senators John McCain (R) and Russ Feingold (D), limits the line-item veto power so that the President can only strip out earmarks, not entire budget appropriations."

"Passage of this legislation would put pressure on President Obama to live up to his rhetoric on fiscal discipline. But it would also give him a powerful tool to cut out waste and pork such as some of the nonsense in the current budget bill."

[Emphasis] ---> "The fact that this is a bipartisan effort, and that Republicans want to give this power to a Democrat President, are clues that this is a real attempt at reform and not political game-playing. I completely support this legislation and hope it passes. It is clear that Congress, regardless of which party is in charge, cannot hold the line on spending. Thus if we are going to have any fiscal responsibility we are going to have to empower our President to implement it."

Rob--I taught English in the public schools for 35 years so I think I know a little more about them than someone who never darkened their doors.
When I started teaching, I taught four classes with a total of about 130-135 students. It took 40 hours outside of class time to grade one set of essays from all the classes. Our students wrote three in a nine week period. This grading was in addition to preparing for classes, doing other grading, and working at extra-curriculum activities. Our department received national recognition, and universities in our state praised our students--not just the academically gifted students, but those across the spectrum.

When I retired, I taught six classes a day with about 150 students. No longer was it possible to have our students write as often, nor could we find time to work with individual students. However, we kept trying. In our state, students pay for their own books, and we had to drop field trips because we had no money for transportation even when the students paid the fees for the trips.

Who made an irresponsible comment? I'll put my knowledge and experience in education against yours on any given day. So many people seem to think that, because they were students "in the day," they know all there is to know about public education.

You've taken a very narrow view of my comments, but I can tell you that public schools don't have the Camelot existence you seem to envision. Again, you must reside in Fantasy Land.

You are paying 16% GNP for insurance. No other country that I know of comes close to that.
Some with the best health care pay 6-8% GNP.
Greed in several areas, the largest being insurance companies.
We could be as smart as Taiwan i.e., take a look at other countries for what work well with them, see how that melds with us and our culture, then create our health care system from that fact based foundation.
In the meantime (as in that will never happen) we need to take a step toward health care sanity.... See More

Baron Hill At Tuesday night’s Blue Dog Coalition meeting, the group adopted this bill as an official Blue Dog position, meaning 2/3 of Coalition Members present voted to make it an official position. This bill also has a very real chance of moving in both chambers, as Senator Kent Conrad is an ardent supporter of it.

In a direct challenge to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Coalition voted Tuesday night to endorse a powerful bipartisan commission with fast-track authority to bring legislation to the House and Senate floor that would slash the federal deficit.

Baron Hill Each year, 9,800 Southern Indiana seniors hit the donut hole and are forced to pay their full drug costs, despite having Part D drug coverage. This is completely unfair and places an unnecessary burden on our seniors. The Affordable Health Care for America Act will immediately address this issue by covering the first... $500 of donut hole costs in 2010 and cutting brand-name drug costs by 50 percent, while also gradually closing the gap completely.

Baron Hill This week, I have heard from several Southern Indiana seniors who are justifiably concerned by what they’re hearing from a group outside Indiana regarding how Medicare would be affected by the health care reform bill.
