It is in the hands of the US to accept the kyoto protocol, by reducing the emission of VOCs, Green house gases, SPM etc by 5%, and thats the only thing that can make it work. US only contribute about 5% of the worlds' pollution.

"US only contribute about 5% of the worlds' pollution."

WTF?!!??!! You seem to have missed typing a 2, as in the US produces 25% of the world's pollution. And when you consider that a huge amount of China and India's pollution is actually on behalf of First World consumers then the picture gets even worse.

Yes 5% is the share of the US in global population
25% is the share in emissions.

Current debate in Washington around carbon regulation appears to be centered on the cost of cap and trade.I wonder if there is any consideration to the cost of not regulating carbon? I know in my town NYC we are close to sea level and have to pump water out of our subway system. What's going to happen when sea level raises 1 foo? Maybe its time that real estate and insurance interests begin to lead the charge on climate reform.

There is plenty of literature on the cost of not regulating the carbon
* Social cost of carbon (harm of warming to the society)
* Economic cost of relying on resources on the verge of depletation for economic growth.

I am highly amused looking at some conservative senators who feel so unsecure about future supply of energy service that they can not imagine something else than nuclear.... See More
No that I have something against nuclear but... if you compare the latest CSP plants and some of the latest nuclear plants, the levelized cost of electricity is almost the same.

We looked at a range of renewable energy technologies in our film, including the solar thermal technology of Dr David Mills now being developed in the US, showing the prototype in Australia.

Mills has done a lot of research on grid power using a combination of renewable energy sources: solar thermal, wind et al, and has some really interesting perspectives.... See More
This paper, "Solar Thermal as the Plausible Basis of Grid-connected Power", is worth a read.

There is no doubt that we have an array of technologies that will be effective in reducing carbon emissions. I suppose we can't under estimate the value of the lobbying dollar in influencing energy policy. Currently-in Washington- Exxon far out spends all environmental groups combined. What is sad is that the consequence of such manipulation bodes ... See Moresuch dire consequences. Efforts to compromise on the current energy bill have proven unsatisfactory- serving to gut EPA regulations in favor of some hybred connessions to the coal and oil industry. What is needed in a social and ethical paradgm shift. This begins in the living room- but needs to extend to Washington as well. Perhaps goverment is not best suited to this task.

A range of strategies will be needed in all areas, including reaching and engaging people in a positive way. Fear of transition and what might be lost is hampering focus on potential solutions and areas of future wellbeing for all IMO. This is being used by vested interests to drum up opposition to positive change. Keeping the focus on positive options is essential in my view....
