Hello All
- I have a 10 year old son that was involved in a traumatic eye injury while playing at the neighbor's house about 10 months ago to the day. A babysitter threw a bamboo skewer across the living room and it struck my son in his left eye. The laceration was a corneal stellate (star shape) with leaking fluid, h...is eye was completely milky covered within 10 hours. The first surgery was tedious and done to stabilize the cornea. Our amazing doctor carefully extracted miniscule wood shavings from the inner eye and performednothing short of a miracle accordin to all the eye doctors we have seen. AJ was sewn up with 10 sutures , and a partial iris removal was done. 2 days later he was in surgery to remove a complex cataract, and implanted with an IOL. AJ has made remarkable progress, and I know how extremely lucky we are. However, his outlook for the future remains the same and it appears that this may be as good as its going to get. His vision currently stands at 50/20, ( which is a huge feat in itself) however he no longer has the ability to focus, he lost all his peripheral vision, and due to the nature of the scarring, his vision is like viewing life through a pinhole. He has daily migraines, extreme sensitivity to light, also, he has developed extreme caution and fearfulness that not only reinjury to his eye could occur, but worse, that something may happen to the other eye as well.
We are currently in a lawsuit with the homeowners insurance of the babysitter. We understand accidents happen and we are not angry with the babysitter, however this is something my son will live with for the rest of his life, and he has begun to feel hopeless. I struggled with what a fair amount of compensation would be for what my son is going through. I feel I am not asking for the world. To help me decide what to do I asked my son a simple question. If you had a choice between half a million dollars ( a random amount ) and no improvement in your vision, would you take it?
His answer was quick and simple. "Mom, all the money in the world won't take away this feeling" I would rather donate whatever money comes from this to a research place so that maybe they could fix me to the way i was before, and other kids. I don't want anyone to ever have to feel the way I feel.
Pretty powerful. I was speechless, humbled but more than that, I felt that he might be onto something. And it sparked an idea...I told my son, what if you did just that. What if you donated a portion of the money to research? Which brings me to the idea my son and I came up with to raise money and awareness for this cause. My son doesn't believe a ten year old has the ability to do much of anything, but I completely disagree. Once in awhile a rare person comes along who is willing to give of themselves so completely and selflessly, those are the people that affect the greatest change. Since his injury we have picked up different collectibles with eyeballs on them. Aj made a decision that if this was going to be his lot in life than he was going to "own it" and make it his own.
He has been on a mission to collect eyeball art, anything from bottles, to photos, but we really love the original artworks we've found in different places. This is where the idea started...Just recently I asked my artsy family members to design the most awesome, colorful, and original artworks for my son this Christmas in lieu of gifts. This is more special I thought and he would love it.
But why couldn't it be more than that...what if people all over started sending him pieces. I would love for him to start receiving these pieces just to kick start his hope again. He told me that seeing the pictures in his room everyday reminds him of what he went through, but more importantly what he has overcome. Powerful...he would like to one day be in the Guinness Book of World Records for Largest Collection of Eyeball Art. Funny, right...stranger things have happened...
He wants to house his collection somewhere "cool" someday and charge a donation to view these pieces with the money to go to research. We also had the idea of selecting a winner each month and making t-shirts to sell to donate...the ideas keep ballooning.
I am a proud, proud mother, with an amazing son and a Call to Action. Let's see what happens. We would like to call it the "One Eye Open Project" because AJ used to console me when I would get down or feeling guilty. He would tell me,"mom, I only need one eye to see." It used to make me smile with sadness at what that would feel like...so in honor of my son and his amazing attitude toward making his situation better and the lives of others ... we would like to invite anyone interested to take part in the "One Eye Open Project" ...sometimes only one eye open can change your whole perspective.
Thank you sincerely, Regan Bebble
Please let me know if anyone is interested...we have many more ideas ... thank you.
