Laura Seeley

Laura Seeley Brendan Klare, a PhD student in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, will be running the Chicago Marathon on Sunday, October 11. He says, "I think that the long training for a marathon has helped me tremendously with my research. The long runs are a great time to reflect on projects and problems. I would...... highly encourage anyone interested in challenging themselves to the goal of running a marathon or half-marathon. It is a great experience!" The department will also be represented in the Detroit Marathon on October 18; Koichiro Niinuma, visiting researcher from Japan, will be running, along with his wife. Is anyone else running -- or know of anyone else running -- in either of these marathons? If so, give a shout-out on the page!

Tom FieldsIdaho National Laboratory is using high performance computers to perform modeling and simulation for nuclear reactors.

INL’s high-performance computing center provides general use scientific computing capabilities to support the lab’s efforts in advanced modeling and simulation. The center supports a wide range of research activities, including performance of materials in harsh environments (including the effects of irradiation and hig......h temperatures), modeling of geomechanical changes in subsurface flow, performance of advanced gas-cooled nuclear reactors, and multiscale analysis of nuclear fuel performance.

Michigan State University Department of Computer Science and Engineering Traditional approaches to machine learning and statistical inference are passive, in the sense that all data are collected prior to analysis in a non-adaptive fashion. One can envision, however more active strategies in which information gleaned from previously collected data is used to guide the selection of new data....... This talk discusses the emerging theory of such "active learning" methods. I will show that feedback between data analysis and data collection can be crucial for effective learning and inference. The talk will describe two active learning problems. First, I will consider binary-valued prediction (classification) problems, for which the prediction errors of passive learning methods can be exponentially larger than those of active learning. Second, I will discuss the role of active learning in the recovery of sparse signals in noise. I will show that certain weak, sparse patterns are imperceptible from passive measurements, but can be recovered perfectly using selective sensing.

Michigan State University Department of Computer Science and Engineering Internet services generate various types of data, such as web pages with hyperlinks, customer purchase, click stream, rating, etc. Many tasks require learning from these data, for example, recommendation, ranking, customer targeting, personalization, link prediction. We explore generic statistical relational models fo......r these data. We focus on the issues: 1) the computational complexity of learning; 2) how to efficiently incorporate auxiliary information; 3) the interpretability of models.

Renée Szostek

Renée Szostek I have many fond memories. I appreciated the camaraderie among the students, and the feeling of community in the department. I remember how friendly the students were toward one another, and how the professors were willing to listen to and talk with their students.

When I was a student, we didn't run our computer pr......ograms interactively. Instead, we submitted batch jobs, and were limited to only five runs per day. The counter was reset at midnight. Students would often work on their programs after that time, in order to obtain the additional runs. We were also given an account, and each batch job cost a certain amount.

I remember how we used to wait in line to use a terminal (which was connected to a mainframe computer), and wait around in the output room for our printouts, which were on green and white paper. My favorite classes were in theoretical computer science. I also appreciated the elegance of the old computer science building.
