The Degania Group Poll: there seems to be an interesting split between people working for the next two weeks - and those who are just enjoying time off through the new year. Where do you fall? Are you working most days, working but out of the office, just checking e-mail - or disconnecting completely?

The Degania Group True, there seems to be some optimism about the economy. However, most people I know are still looking for new jobs or struggling in their current ones. I'd love your opinion: Is $90 (individual members)/$100 (non-members) for a 2-hour LUNCHTIME holiday party a bit on the expensive side?

That's a little extreme for Lunch, but if it's an open bar AND during holiday season AND I'm NYC It would not surprise me.

The Degania Group How NOT to open a cover letter for a professional marketing position: "To whom it may concern: My name is XXX. I was born and raised in XXX. I am part of large family who are my rock. They are a great support group and I feel like I am very lucky because they are in my life. They have taught me so much about life and how to approach what life throws at you."

Oh yes-- I WOULD! :) How about "I am a single mother and I would like this job because I want to work from home and take care of my kids." -- Jeeze -so now companies pay people to raise their children? (side note- the job wasn't even a WFH position!)

What makes state legislators -- along with hapless mayoral candidate Bill Thompson -- think we're the perfect source of revenue to close the MTA budget gap?

Ditto. I'm fuming about this new tax. Yet another example of how NY is not friendly to small business. They must be emulating CA.

How can you NOT be fuming? It's absolutely absurd. Small businesses have enough going against them - not to mention health insurance costs - why not make it virtually impossible for them to survive - or just drive them out of the area? It is one good argument for being based in Jersey...I guess they must have forgotten to include it in the laundry list of areas included in the district...

The Degania Group Just a thought: shouldn't websites, especially those promoting writing and editing services, reflect proper grammar, spelling and punctuation? (Clarity and brevity would be ideal - but I'd refrain from comment if they could just execute on the fundamentals...)

Nope - just building community, inspiring others, and creating jobs. I guess the pay from the night class wasn't enough for the instructor...so sad...doesn't really "inspire" someone to take the class.

The Degania Group In this economy, it's difficult enough to find jobs. If colleges and universities really want to help their students, why do they still charge employers to be part of job fairs?
