Our library had very limited funds but we wanted to find a space to devote to our teen patrons so they would feel comfortable and have a space they could feel was their own. We removed some very outdated and underused game computers in a small corner. Then we went to work planning... and shopping back to school dorm sales. We wanted to add color and comfortable seating as well as space for our new graphic novels. We used old records to make the "Teen Spot" signs and then hung CDs from the ceiling to add a sparkle and show the progression from vinyl to CD and back again! A very generous patron donated a table and chairs that the husband of one of our employees refinished for the area. Moving a bookcase helped separate the area and add display for the graphic novels. Bright wall graphics, rug, lamp and chairs add the color needed. A couple of colorful posters and magnetic book lovers word magnets purchased from Demco along with a dry erase board and a couple rectangle bulletin boards complete the area. All done with a extremely limited budget and a lot of work from library employees. It is now everyone's favorite area!

When a class visits our middle school library it's always so crowded and since I'm the only librarian I can't possibly help everyone. I've tried to embed information into my shelving areas that allow students to find books independently as much as possible. Many teen fiction books ...are published in series, so I post little Series Order signs on the shelves next to the books. That way students don't have to find me or another source to learn which book to read next in their favorite series. It takes some work to update these each year but overall it saves time. I use Demco's subject labels for both the spines of the books and the series order signs so kids can scan the shelves for a preferred genre if they are looking to start a new series. The signs have the series name, author, and titles listed in order, and they are laminated.
