Come into the urban homestead’s kitchen this time of year and there’s blood splattered everywhere - pomegranate “blood” Getting to their tangy delicious fruits sometimes causes some uncontrolled spurts (got a direct hit in my eye the other day, stung for a bit) - not to mention staining one’s h...

I know many of our local readership wonder what happened to our monthly FILM & FOOD NIGHTS. Well, these last three months we have been busy –been out & about in the community participating in a slew of film festivals and giving talks/presentations. ...

Yes, kudos to the City and congratulations in your water-conserving efforts. This is such a critical issue!

Our 41-unit community is also in Pasadena and we were lucky to obtain a donation from the City of 77 low-flow showerheads for all of our units! Our HOA then purchased low-flow kitchen and bathroom aerators at bulk price directly from the manufacturer ($150 incl. tax and shipping) so now our entire community is reducing our water consumption by at least 18% and all for a total of $150!

Not very well, I am afraid. “These are the top 10 items sold at grocery stores for the 52 weeks ending June 14, 2009. They are ranked by dollar sales. 1. Carbonated beverages 2. Milk 3. Fresh bread and rolls 4...

As the old saw goes... "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink". Very sad to see people's priorities thus!
I started growing my own this year, but so far it's only been lettuce and artichokes; I'm hoping to expand that with a winter crop, then more space opened up in the spring. But so far I'm more aware of what I buy when grocery shopping, and it's certainly nothing like that statistical average! Gardening has certainly helped however.

Canning can become an addiction - seriously. Once you mastered the art, canned your own homegrown or local foods well it’s the end of tin cans in your life. I started canning over six years ago and I’ve been a canning addict ever since. We...

Jordanne finished her first batch of mead and, boy, it’s it a beauty, not to mention very delicious. Now, I am not a drinker; but, this stuff–this stuff I could definitely guzzle down. Mead, also known as honey wine, the oldest — and easiest to make! — fermented drink in the world! As soo...

We had 2 ducks killed by puppies, aged 3 months, if you can imagine. A third was injured and did hobble around on a bad leg for months but finally healed. Though your circumstances are different, I would like to ask if you have any experience with swans, as I understand that they are very able to fend off dogs, to a point where the dogs no longer bother any of the birds.

I love my animals selfishly as they bring me such peace and simple pleasure. We recently lost our sweet little Sammy, a nigerian goat, after a strong fight he put in against UC. It has broken my heart and it is a matter I can not even discuss without my heart just gushing. Thank you for sharing this article.
