DEREK“TheBandit” Richardson, the man who single-handedly changed the face of dance music in South Africa is taking a bow and heading on up
With the opportunity to grow beyond the borders of the place he will always call home, “TheBandit” is taking flight. But before his packs his record box, he’s doing one last rifle to deliver a double disc loaded with some of his biggest moments in music.
After an association with Sheer Music that extends beyond a decade, Derek decided to unpack the tracks that became anthems, and with them hits and a multitude of memories that will last forever. Take Paul Van Dyk’s “We Are Alive”, Tiesto’s “Traffic Miss Jane”, “It’s A Fine Day” and “”Exploration Of Space from Cosmic Gate and the immediate conclusion is that these are indeed great examples of everything that the album professes to be and delivers on.
Having just recently auctioned his entire record collection in the name of charity, the process to lift the tunes before the magnitude of tracks help change the lives of hundreds of deserving kids needed to be done swiftly. “The auction was collaboration between BID OR BUY and THE STARFISH FOUNDATION,” Derek explains. “The response to it has been truly amazing,” he enthuses.
The success of the auction is testament to a talent that is unpacked here, sadly for the last time in a truly South African context, but thankfully THE CLASSICS – THE CLOSING SET is a fitting celebration of success, as well as a convincing ‘Thank you’ to the many tens of thousands that have supported his genius since he began spinning discs the world over.
“It’s been a privilege to play some of the best dance created, not only from within the borders of South Africa, but from across the globe,” Richardson acknowledges. “You can have great sets, but if the fans are not there to absorb and engage with it, it dies there. The fact that all of the tracks on THE CLASSICS – THE CLOSING SET are all hits in their own right is testament to the fact that the punters made them so. What I am doing here, in collaboration with Sheer Sound, is confirm their good taste,” he smiles.
Add to that a second MEGAMIX disc and added multimedia components that include an interview with “TheBandit” (conducted by Ian F), video footage and pictures, and all that’s left is to pick up a copy and relive the memories made great by a man whose talent will soon be realised by millions more beyond our borders.
The dance domain has many players, but very few qualified leaders. DEREK “TheBandit” Presents THE CLASSICS – THE CLOSING SET is more than just a compilation of great dance, it is tactile proof of what happens when passion, collaboration and an ear for hits-in-the-making get together and take it all to the next level.
