The full episode of Frontline: The Card Game, which aired last night, is now available for online viewing by following the link above. It really is an eye opener, it shows how the people who can least afford it pay the CC companies the most fees, while the affluent pay little or no fees at all. More importantly, it speaks to the reasons why the government hasn't stepped in to stop abusive practices. Definitely worth watching!

Dr. Debt California has passed a new law, effective immediately, which prevents Loan Modification Firms from collecting advance fees. This new rule applies to lawyer-driven firms as well. If you are considering a loan modification, regardless of whether or not you are in CA, please do your research. There are alot of compani...es out there doing loan mods, and not all of them are on the up-and-up. If you have any questions about loan modification, as always, feel free to ask. Dr. Debt Parents: As your children head back to college, please warn them that the Credit Card companies will be out en masse this year trying to recruit every freshman they can. The reason for the uptick in marketing? Next year, the CARD act will prevent anyone under the age of 21 from opening an individual credit card acco...unt (though joint accounts with a parent will still be allowed).

Dr. Debt Reminder that the first phase of the Credit CARD act of 2009 goes into effect tomorrow. What this means for you is that creditors must send out bills at least 21 days in advance of the due date and they must notify you 45 days in advance before making any changes to your account terms. Also, if you cancel a credit ca...rd because they wanted to change the terms, this can no longer negatively effect your credit score.
