In a world of digital ephemera, one-off MP3s, and fragmented audiences, music recordings are in danger of becoming disposable and impersonal. Every other week, another pundit proclaims the album has become a relic of the past. We disagree. We believe that The Album is a cohesive artistic statement with an importa...nt and lasting role in pop culture, and that rumors of its death are greatly exaggerated. Would anyone claim that Radiohead’s In Rainbows is just a "collection of singles"? Or that Funeral by Arcade Fire is best appreciated one song at a time? The album isn't merely enduring in its recorded format -- the Pixies, Bruce Springsteen, Devo, Van Morrison, Steely Dan and more have taken to performing complete albums live in concert. Green Day’s American Idiot is being staged as a rock musical with a Tony-winning director. Beck and guest musicians are reinterpreting classic albums like The Velvet Underground & Nico for his “Record Club” on Beck.com. Vinyl sales are increasing, and digital music retailers like eMusic -- this site’s sponsor -- cater to fans that value experiencing albums in their entirety. This community is, quite simply, a hub in celebration of the album— both the mainstream and the underexposed. This is a place to highlight records that are best consumed whole. We want to hear from you – which albums changed the way you thought about music? Which albums are a start-to-finish experience for you? And which albums could you not bear to dismantle? Embrace music the way the artist intended: Embrace the Album.

From what I can tell, this seems to be the buzz band of the moment. Our reviewer: "Real Estate's pop is downcast, sentimental and occasionally naïve... combined with their mushy production & unique attitude, it aligns
itself with the lo-fi gurgle of
nu-garage, the smeary reverb of glo-fi, the vulnerable harmonies of Griz...zly Bear and even the weed-soaked nostalgia of Animal Collective." It's growing on me... what do you think?

Something happened in the asymmetrical four corners of Canada. We don't
know what it was, but it was perpetrated by Canadians — who are not
unlike Americans but, as their socialized medicine, relative humility & widespread knowledge of French make clear, are not like Ame...ricans
at all. Read on about the great Canadian music of 2003:

eMusic I love reading artist blog posts. This is from one of our new favorites, Thao, and she perfectly describes why we should "honor the sad, slow breakup song for the f****d-up and necessary friend it is."
bitchmagazine.org
No one pays attention to breakup songs until they need them. When you first hear one you are probably not interested; you are probably turned off by its utter depression, and so you skip ahead to the next ...

eMusic From "The King of Soul," Otis Redding, to rock snob favorites Big Star, Stax has been churning out iconic stars since 1957. Check out our soulful Stax Essentials hub where eMusic presents "an essential guide to a terrific home for American music." If you’ve been hit with the winter blues already, you will enjoy this co...mpilation of sultry soul and irresistible funk. And if you don’t have any Isaac Hayes in your collection, what are you waiting for??

There is no label like Stax. Not even close. No one combined the stomp and grit of Southern soul with elegant and indelible pop songwriting like the Memphis-born label. From 1957 through 1975, and then ...

eMusic Was September 11, 2001 really the day the music died? It sure seemed like it at the time. Melissa Maerz takes a look at Moldy Peaches, the Walkmen, Interpol and the Strokes and what they came to mean in the shadow of 9/11. Almost afraid to ask but: is there a record that most reminds you of 2001?

eMusic The legendary Paul McCartney released his new live record, "Good Evening New York City," today and we’ve got it here at eMusic US. But don’t worry outlanders! The album will be available to all EU and Canadian customers on Dec. 7th. For even more context on McCartney’s repertoire, check out our Friends and Followers hu...b and you’ll find “an eMusic-curated collection of artists young and old with a through line to the former Beatle, in some places you may not expect.”

To say Paul McCartney is an influential artist is a bit of an undersell. He’s an icon not just to hundreds of power-poppin’ young bands, but also to his peers, and even some of his elders. Macca returned ...

Ben Westhoff keeps his cool in this one, asking probing questions
of one of the most legendary rappers still breathing. Rakim, for his
part, is extremely candid about the uncharted road that a rapper

know it. His new record, The Seventh Seal, comes out next week
