Ms. Rahn, 3rd Grade, she played the piano for us as we all sat on the floor and listened, then she read us the book 'Charlotte's Web' fond memories!

Mrs. Federspiel 5th and 6th grade language arts. She was so mean to many of the kids, that I would probably hate it if I taught with her. For me though, she pushed me to be my absolute best and would accept nothing less. She treated me like gold because of it though. I would stay after and help her. I still have a doll that she gave me for helping.

Edutopia Poll: What's the best gift for a teacher? Though it's often the thought that counts, parents like to splurge when it comes to thanking those who make such a difference in their children's lives. Any preferences? Take our poll.

Source: www.edutopia.org
Families may be tightening their belts these days, but teachers can still expect to receive tokens of gratitude this holiday season. Though last year's gift certificate for a massage session may be this year's basket of scented soaps, for many educators it's the thought that counts. ...

Are you serious? My growing experience has been that elementary school teachers get the bribes. But, High School teachersm on the other hand, that I speak to have been receiving an ever dwindling trove of treasure over the last 15 years. It may be an ethical question of whether parents should be giving gifts to teachers or teachers accepting them, ... Read Moreanyway. Teachers should not be family friends. Furthermore, teachers probably should not even be friends of the community. We are not running for office, we are there to be precise and candid about the progress of their children. And, that reality is not always a pleasant portrait.

Not, quite sure what I stumbled on to, and am not too proficient at "facebooking" but I am extreamly passionate about true educational reform. I teach public school and believe in it, but we are still teaching like it is 1950 not 2010. Does anyone know what academics and schools are teaching for the 21st century; Kids ...working in collaborative groups and using technology to find their own information, using real world applications like Excel to solve real world problems even in elementary school. Teaching kids to think not just memorize to pass standardized test ect...Read More

I don't mean to whine, but I'm feeling neglected. For all my questions about the eventual impact on education with Teach for America, I find myself a little pouty that TFA teachers get all this professional development, and I don't.

Edutopia Dive into an engaging discussion happening in our Assessment group: How can we assure that these wonderful authentic assessment processes and systems truly include student interest?

Source: www.edutopia.org
The importance of student interest, need, voice and choice as well as teacher voice and choice is a critical part of student learning and authentic assessment. In this nation, standardization has meant that assessment is often done TO students and teachers who implement, but not CREATE the assessmen...

There's not much to 'get' besides the fact that school children are caught in the cross fire of politics. It's up to parents to individually and collectively stand up and advocate for their kids and their families, and do it now. Parents do not normally anyone to mistreat their children - why should they allow schools and politicians to do so? ... Read MoreParents: Grow a backbone. Organize. Picket. Start a charter school that tests in a sane way. Open a private school and avoid testing. Or home school. Just do what you have to do to take back your children's lives.

My school is now struggling to keep it's "growth" If we do not do better next year we will be put on "academic watch". We have purchased a program called Study Island which we are having problems getting it to work properly with the limited number of computers we have, and starting soon we are going to use a test called MAPS which will point out ... Read Morethe areas our students are weak in. Over all I do not teach a tested area so I am treated like some black sheep. The teachers who are in tested subjects are overstressed and constantly remind the people who are not in tested subjects how unimportant your subject is. Oh I teach 8th grade US History one of those little unimportant things that are not deemed testable yet.
