With the release of their sixth album, From the Corner to the Block, the five-man group
GALACTIC - drummer Stanton Moore, bassist Robert Mercurio, saxophonist/harmonica
player Ben Ellman, keyboardist Richard Vogel, and guitarist Jeff Raines – reaffirms their
standing as one of the funkiest outfits in the known universe. F...eaturing a cherry-picked
guest list of some of hip-hop’s most dynamic lyricists – including Juvenile, Gift of Gab
(Blackalicious), Lyrics Born, Ladybug Mecca (Digable Planets), Mr. Lif, Chali 2na
(Jurrasic 5), Vursatyl (Lifesavas), and Boots Riley (The Coup), From the Corner to the
Block exposes GALACTIC’s organic grooves to an urban ear while still maintaining
their essential funk aesthetic.
The band started out over a decade ago as an instrumental act in the tradition of the
Meters, the JB’s, and Booker T. & the MG’s – bands equally comfortable recording their
own material or working with vocalists. From the Corner to the Block grew out of
GALACTIC’s experiences touring with artists like the Roots, Jurassic 5, Triple Threat
DJ’s and Gift of Gab. Though it features cameos from a “wish list” of fan-favorite MCs,
this isn’t a typical hip-hop album per se, but a contemporary funk record that just happens
to feature hip-hop vocalists. “We never set out to make a rap record,” explains Ellman,
who produced the record with assistance from engineer extraordinaire Count (Halou,
Quannum, DJ Shadow). “We wanted to kinda modernize the New Orleans sound,” adds
Mercurio.
The New Orleans legacy echoes throughout the album, indeed. The brassy “Bounce
Baby” (featuring DJ Z-Trip) stirs up wah-wah guitar, a horn-driven melody, syncopated
beats, and turntable wizardry into a potent rhythmic instrumental. “Tuff Love” (featuring
Trombone Shorty) offers a taste of some of New Orleans’ hottest young talent. “Second
and Dryades,” (featuring Big Chief Monk Boudreau), evokes the spirit of the Wild
Magnolias – it’s a percussion-laced Mardi Gras anthem for the digi generation, on which
Boudreau relates the story of being an Indian on Mardi Gras day. The song sure to raise
eyebrows though is the title track and first single, featuring the Soul Rebels Brass Band
and platinum rapper Juvenile (who tapped GALACTIC to back him on the “Jimmy
Kimmel Show”). Mercurio, for one, is happy with the outcome. “It sounds like it was all
supposed to be there, this track was meant to happen” he says.
The rest of the album features a diverse array of funky arrangements, vocal deliveries,
and musical expressions, from sexy downtempo jams like “Squarebiz,” featuring the
ever-delectable Ladybug Mecca and singer Nino Moschella; to uptempo party-starters
like “What You Need” with Lyrics Born, and “Hustle Up” with Boots Riley (which
Mercurio calls “a total rock tune” dressed in funky threads); to semi-autobiographical
tales of urban street life by Mr. Lif (“…And I’m Out”), Vursatyl & Ohmega Watts (“Find
My Home”), Lateef the Truth Seeker (“No Way”), Gift of Gab (“The Corner”), and Chali
2na (“Think Back”).
Even with all the different vocalists, the songs maintain a sense of thematic consistency.
As Ellman explains, this was by design: the rappers were each asked to write about a
corner. “It could have been any corner,” he says. “Everyone had a different perspective.”
Many contemporary all-star collaborations are purely commercial exercises, yet From the
Corner to the Block stands as a labor of love, connecting GALACTIC’s hip-hop jones
and their guests’ fervor for funk aesthetics. The result isn’t just the grooviest, funkiest
record of 2007, but perhaps the finest post-Katrina album to come out of New Orleans.

Vinicio Capossela – biographical notes
Vinicio Capossela was born in Hanover, Germany, in 1965. His first album All’una e trentacinque circa (1990) earned him the Tenco Award for best debut album. A series of records followed (Modì, 1991; Camera a sud, 1994; Il ballo di San Vito, 1996; Liveinvolvo, 1998; Canzoni a manov...ella, 2000, Tenco Award 2001; L’indispensabile, 2003; Ovunque proteggi, Tenco Award 2006 and Nel niente sotto il sole, 2006; Da solo, 2008 and his latest Solo show alive, released on 13 November 2009), which gradually expanded his fanbase.
The collaborations Vinicio has had over the years are as important as his albums. Cases in point are the first readings on John Fante alongside Vincenzo Costantino “Cinaski”, with whom he published the book In clandestinità, Mr Pall incontra Mr Mall (Feltrinelli) some months ago; the tour with Neat Veliov’s Kocani Orkestar, the Macedonian brass fanfare brought to fame by the film Time of the Gypsies by Emir Kusturica; the constant collaboration with guitarist Marc Ribot and the Orchestra d’Archi Italiana - Italian String Orchestra conducted by Mario Brunello; the recordings of Michelangelo’s Sonnets with Philippe Eidel and the remote collaboration with Pascal Comelade’s toy instruments. Not to mention his side projects between one album and the next, from the Concerti per le Feste (Christmas holidays' concerts) to the gigs devoted to mornas, tangos and rebetika such as Parole d'altrove, or even the shows of music and words staged during the last few years (Fuggite, amanti, amor – Rhymes and Lamentations for Michelangelo and the maritime reading Storie di marinai, profeti e balene – Stories of sailors, prophets and whales).
Radio, writing and cinema converged into Vinicio Capossela’s art on several occasions. In 2004 his first novel came out, Non si muore tutte le mattine. His readings to present to book became an actual theatrical show titled Voci, echi e visioni da Non si muore tutte le mattine, while pages from the book gave birth to a new radio experiment titled Radiocapitolazioni, which was broadcast on Radiotre in November 2004. Two other radio works are of particular importance: the adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and the original radio-tale I cerini di Santo Nicola – Racconto infiammabile per voci, suoni e canzoni, both made and broadcast by Radiodue during the Christmas holidays. In 2009 Vinicio released his book IN CLANDESTINITà, MR PALL INCONTRA MR MALL, a literary meeting in the form of a boxing round, written together with poet Vincenzo Costantino “Cinaski”, which spawned a series of “boxing” readings held at some important literature events (Massenzio Letteratura, Genoa Poetry Festival).
If his relationship with the big screen had been nothing but a fling so far (he appeared in Non chiamarmi Omar by Sergio Staino in 1992), his cameo in Dieci inverni directed by Valerio Mieli and premiered at the Venice Film Festival, as well as the medium-length film La faccia della terra, written by Capossela, directed by Gianfranco Firriolo, premiered at the Milano Film Festival in September 2009 and currently hitting the film festival circuit (like the International Documentary Film Festival in Florence) opened up a new road for him and introduced new possibilities of expression.
The year 2009 ends with the release of Vinicio Capossela’s dvd+cd titled SOLO SHOW ALIVE (directed by Gianfranco Firriolo), which documents his most recent tour in theatres. To coincide with that release, Capossela will resume the SOLO SHOW for the last few gigs, which will deliver a winter-like, pre-Christmas flavour.

Andre Nickatina (a.k.a. Dre Dog) is a San Francisco rapper known for his smoothly aggressive delivery and his scarred smirk, a result of a Daschund attack when he was 6 months old. He has made a name for being a self-enforced underground artist, and has courted controversy several times, most notably after head-tacklin...g the lead march in San Francisco's Gay Pride Parade. Andre Nickatina burst onto the Bay Area rap scene in 1993 with The New Jim Jones on the strength of two individual singles, 'The Ave' and 'Lips', both carrying almost identical beats to Biggie Smalls' 'Juicy' and 'Big Poppa', respectively, though The New Jim Jones was released nearly a year before Biggie's Ready to Die. Andre Nickatina has also dabbled in film, releasing a two-disc set containing his amateur movie and the CD Conversation with a Devil. Andre Nickatina is considered one of the most successful rappers to have come out of San Francisco, and heads his own label Fillmoe Coleman Records. He has released a multitude of albums, most recently Horns and Halos with Equipto, the release of which he celebrated by cutting a Daschund's throat from ear to ear, otherwise known as a Chelsea Smile. His most acclaimed album is Bullets, Blunts, N Ah Big Bankroll. In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Andre Nickatina drew fire among Republicans for citing George W. Bush with a "pimping violation for reckless eyeballing." However, the similar remarks of Kanye West during the NBC Katrina Telethon have drawn far more media attention, primarily a result of Nickatina's usage of unintelligable slang. Most recently, he has drawn the ire of Tipper Gore and the Parents Music Resource Center for saying, "George Bush not only does not care about blacks, he openly wishes we were dead. To paraphrase our local laureate Brotha Lynch Hung, he's an elite baby killer just tryin' to feed his chil'n." Establishing himself as an artist willing to court controversy, these twin outbursts have entered the daily lexicon of the Yay Area.In 2005, Andre Nickatina won the Bay Area Rap Scene Award for Underground Artist of the Year.

Judith Hill Helps Heal The World
In the Spring of 2009, Judith Hill’s life was changed when she was chosen to sing with Michael Jackson on his final tour. When the King of Pop passed on, she was left with the responsibility of sharing what she could of Michael’s vision. Through her touching performance of “Heal the Wor...ld” and her inspiring appearance in “This Is It”, Judith’s gift of song and love for a legend left audiences speechless.
In the short time she spent with Michael, Judith was not only inspired by his music but also by his desire to help the hurting. On December 14th 2009, Judith will show that dedication to the people of Haiti.
This will be Judith’s first benefit concert and will be donating 100% of the ticket sales to the Northwest Haiti Christian Mission. This organization is a part of the Feeding the Thousands campaign, and a sold out benefit concert will bring meals to over 500,000 people. “HOPE: A Benefit for the People of Northwest Haiti” will take place at the historical El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles at 7:30pm. The evening will be presented by Los Angeles based clothing line Yellow, Black & White. Come be a part of Judith’s vision as we use the gift of music to bring hope to a deserving nation.
Tickets are $32 (floor), $42 (VIP) and available on Ticketmaster.com.
