It is due to this same issue that we removed our children from the public school system. When Round Rock ISD was teaching the U.S. Declaration of Independence to 8th graders without showing the students the original text, instead opting for something the teacher found on the internet called the "Modern Day Declaration of Independence" (because 'not... Read More all the students are as smart' as ours they defend), and at the same time they are using 3rd party corporate funded curriculum to teach the 6th graders all about NAFTA, CAFTA, GATT, WTO, and the idea of merging currencies with Canada and Mexico to make something called the "Namero", and receiving no sympathy or recourse from administrators, we said enough is enough. Now we homeschool, not at our convenience I would add. But, most times, the easy way and the right way are not the same.

Bias itself may not be a problem; the quest to eradicate "bias" has turned public schools into ineffective information generators rather than places of learning how to learn. You can't have a value-free education, so any attempt at creating one will necessarily lead to placing value on that great fountain of wisdom, the state. As long as the ... Read Morebureaucrats have no need to compete for funding and can fight the taxpayer with his own money while proclaiming their own magnanimity and superior intellect, there is little incentive for them to peddle anything other than their own anointed visions of utopia.

With that said, I agree with Justin that the best solution is to remove children from the public schools. In the event that parents can't or won't do that, the next requirement is to teach critical thinking skills--rather than decision-making based on emotions--in the home after school hours. It will certainly be an uphill battle, but unfortunately the only way to overcome this form of statist indoctrination is to try to fight it with the very guinea pigs you've sent into the experimentation facility: your children.

I really don't know how to involve the apathetic, uninvolved citizen. He'll need to feel a little discomfort, whether it's in the form of living in a society of people who have little reasoning ability and economic understanding or when/if he realizes his children's college degrees have inflated to the point of worthlessness due to constantly lowered standards. I don't mean to sound cynical, but pain is an awfully powerful motivator, and sometimes it's the only one that works.

Less than 12 hours after posting "Et Tu, Straus?" the aforementioned Republican House Speaker Straus' office called to say that he didn't mean what he said -- or what the news media reported he said -- about being open to the indexing of gasoline taxes. He's just open to it being on the table...

Is this a good thing or are they switching parties like Specter to retain their office? The true test will be for a lifetime Republican to run against them in a primary and see how they fare. Hopefully they have seen the light.

Damned fools. The operative rule should be: 'If there is no compelling reason to vote yes, you must vote no.' At least seven props that should not have passed did and we will now deal with the costs, burdens and reduction of voter oversight.

The logical arguments against Government Controlled Health Care are staggering and to a point off the mark because this issue is not about health care. It is about moving our county, our government, and our culture closer to a socialist system. Those who support Government Health Care will not care about arguments against fraud, waste, or that ...
