A new push to lift the U.S.-Cuba travel ban -- and a new, bad, human rights report there. Should the U.S. open the floodgates for travel to Cuba?
Vito Echevarria

Vito Echevarria Unbridled American travel to Cuba will mean far more than tourists' ability to enjoy Cuba's beaches and smoke Cohiba cigars. American tourists will be able to see the "real Cuba" for themselves -- the negative with the positive, and be able to judge the country on the merits, as opposed to hearing about it from third ...parties.

This YouTube link shows the Cuban government's response to the blogging activities of famed Havana cyber-dissident Yoani Sanchez. Here, her husband Reinaldo Escobar was attacked by a pro-government mob. U.S. tourists, armed with digital cameras, will be able to record such scenes themselves and bring them back to America for all to see, forcing unprecedented scrutiny upon that system -- something similar to the scrutiny visited upon Apartheid South Africa in the 1980s & early 1990s.

Pro-government demonstrators in Cuba interrupted a protest held by Reinaldo Escobar, who claims that his wife was harassed by State Security. CBS News' Portia Siegelbaum reports that Escobar was taken away.

What I call "Cuba's digital revolution" (where locals use digital technology to chronicle daily life in that country, including government repression) seems to be in its infancy there. Judging from this footage posted on YouTube, the world is starting to have the unprecedented ability to see an unfiltered version of daily life in Cuba. All comments are welcome.....

Lorenzo

Lorenzo I posted the attached link to Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz's FB page. NOW I understand better why someone who is portrayed as a "progressive" and has a large, popular following in her home district is actively opposing the FREEDOM TO TRAVEL TO CUBA bill (H.R. 874)..... She has received almost $76,000 in PAC money... from the South Florida Cuban cabal which does NOT favor any change in relationship between the U.S. and Cuban governments. See page 5 for the list of those whose votes have been bought & 'paid for.'

the list of recipients includes the name of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, DEM, FL...she apparently prefers to "represent" just this PACs wishes when given money to do so. I think she's more like a "wolf in sheep's clothing." She is hardly a true Progressive....not when money can buy her position.

Liane Curtis President Obama communicates with Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez

news.smh.com.au
President Barack Obama has answered questions submitted by a celebrated Cuban blogger, saying he isn't interested in "talking for the sake of talking" with Raul Castro and indicating he won't visit the island until the communist government changes its ways.

Petitioners express support via OpenCuba.org, which asks the U.S. government to restore the right for all its citizens to visit Cuba.

Lorenzo Congresswoman (U.S. House of Rep) Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Dem, FL) is leading a small group of other Dems in an effort to STOP any passage of HR 874.... What kind of progressive politician would be doing this?? I think such a person, who is currently hitting many (most? all??) of the broadcast & cable/sat. news ...programs is simply out working on her re-election bid....and doesn't have the 'greater good' in mind---just her own re-election.

THE FUNDAMENTAL fallacy underlying US policy toward Cuba is that isolation forces transformation. The most glaring proof that the 50-year embargo has failed is that the Cuban regime remains profoundly repressive.
Ed Matson

Ed Matson Got on the phone with my congressman in DC. Amazing that the American citizen does not see the importance of freeing the Cuban people and allowing all Americans into a great country.
