Pick 5 for the Environment (from the US EPA) From Jeffrey Levy: We've seen a couple of comments recently about "locavorism," or eating locally. I thought you might enjoy reading a few related posts from our blog, Greenversations. Note especially the last one: our Question of the Week, which got 154 comments! Something's wrong with Facebook's linking mechanism, so I'll just include the URL here: http://blog.epa.gov/blog/?s=locavore

As you may know, particulate matter (particles) is one of the industrial air pollution problems that must be controlled. It's not a problem isolated to a few industries, but pervasive across a wide variety of industries. Hence emission control is enforced by law all over the world.
An electrostatic precipitator (ESP) or... electrostatic air cleaner is a particulate collection device that removes fine particulate matter such as dust and smoke from the air / gas stream using the force of an induced electrostatic charge. ESP applies energy only to the particulate matter being collected and therefore is very efficient in its consumption of energy in the form of electricity.

I put all the vegetable waste from my meals back into my garden, so I recycle plant materials that I don't consume. I leave it over the winter (up here in IN) as mulch and till it back into the ground in spring. The garden of course is quite small (16ftX4ft) but I obtain enough tomatoes, beans, onions, spinach, lettu...ce, beans, parsley, rosemary, sage, oregano, and asparagus for a few meals. I have given bunches of parsley to friends.Read More

Liz Montesi Pucci When possible, I buy locally grown or organic produce. Did you know that the sku # on organic produce always starts with a 9?

My husband rides the bus to work, and I practice fuel efficient driving techniques. In addition, I'm educating people on how to drive more fuel efficiency via my web site:

Jeffrey Gahris I like to ride my bike to a commuter train station and then train it to the office. I live near Chicago but I can frequently do this, even in the winter months.

Pamela It's good to be green, and it doesn't take anymore time or money to do so.

Learn about how wood smoke from United States residential wood stoves impacts the environment. Black Carbon or soot is the 2nd leading cause of global warming and stopping Black Carbon is the quickest way to slow climate change. Black Carbon from residential heating or industry is the 2nd most prevalent cause of part...iculates in most U.S. States behind auto emissions, but in the state of Maine in 2008 residential wood stoves surpassed auto emissions as the main source of Black Carbon. It could happen in your state unless regulations and bans of outdoor wood boilers and wood stoves are passed. Outdoor wood boilers are illegal in the state of Washington, and in at least 4 states regulations to do the same are in place but not enforced. Learn more at websites by
