Learn about how wood smoke from United States residential wood stoves impacts the environment. Black Carbon or soot is the 2nd leading cause of global warming and stopping Black Carbon is the quickest way to slow climate change. Black Carbon from residential heating or industry is the 2nd most prevalent cause of part...iculates in most U.S. States behind auto emissions, but in the state of Maine in 2008 residential wood stoves surpassed auto emissions as the main source of Black Carbon. It could happen in your state unless regulations and bans of outdoor wood boilers and wood stoves are passed. Outdoor wood boilers are illegal in the state of Washington, and in at least 4 states regulations to do the same are in place but not enforced. Learn more at websites by

Have an indoor recycle bin in the kitchen ( a tall, stainless steel waste can with a top ) and when it's full, we move the contents to the curbside recyle bin in the garage. Trying to buy fewer convenience foods and make meals from local, fresh stuff.

I finally took my reusable shopping bags in the grocery store and used them today. Love it! Much easier to carry than the plastic bags.

Pick 5 for the Environment (from the US EPA) Hey, we're considering doing a "flash mob" park cleanup, where we name a date and ask everyone to grab folks they know, go clean up their favorite park for an hour, and then report back what they did and where. Would you participate?
