Did you know that ancient Roman wedding food faire and customs formed the basis for most modern western marriage customs? Other than throwing nuts instead of rice, much of the customs remain, minus the ancient Roman custom of tossing the bridal torch to the guests. ...

Eternally Cool Blog The NYTimes has an article today about the Euphronios Vase, now on display at the Villa Giulia, and Vernon Silver's new book, “The Lost Chalice: The Epic Hunt for a Priceless Masterpiece.” which they rate as a "first-class page turner documenting the stolen krater’s travels from ancient Greece to Etruscan Italy to New York and then back here — and of the travails of another work also by the sublime Euphronios."

Italy’s biggest prize in the war against looting antiquities went on view recently at the Villa Giulia in Rome. Italians didn’t seem to care much.

Eternally Cool Blog This falls into the category of not-Eternally-Cool. Some chunks of the Aurelian wall collapsed yesterday:

There are fears for the future of Rome’s ancient Aurelian walls after chunks collapsed on Tuesday. A major street was closed in the Italian capital after bricks from the nearly 2000-year old wall fell down.

"Now more than ever we need leaders who have an ability to leap forward in time to a world differently envisioned, then spring back and make the changes required to realize it. What will we see of that this week, here in this dynamic country whose generosity of spirit infects everyone who visits?"

We've been passing this new book, The Roman Forum by David Watkin, around the Compound for a couple of weeks. We like it quite a lot--not least for its anti-guidebook, complex explanations of the importance of the Forum to post-antique Rome.
If you like the Forum and want to know more, get a copy (though you'll have to order from the UK as it's not out in the US yet).
