NYT story quotes Ethicurean "Meet Your Bacon" post for its conclusion: Jake Lahne…recently enrolled in a meat-production course at school to achieve “a
real understanding of where meat comes from,” he wrote on a blog, the
Ethicurean. He got it. “Animals do not want to die,” he wrote.
“They can feel pain and fear, and, jus...t like us, will struggle to
breathe for even one single more second.…here’s the
truth about any slaughter: it is both morally difficult and really gross.”

A new generation of carnivores is learning to butcher, and in some cases, slaughter their own animals think of it as do-it-yourself meat.

Carin - I would agree with the time-consuming, but I find it fascinating, not at all tedious. Every cut is a new discovery, and I never stop being amazed that all that MEAT is what comprises an animal. Us, too.

Ethicurean Daring to study what most of us close our eyes to

Source: www.ethicurean.com
By Jake Lahne I want to describe our unfamiliarity with animal slaughter as “startling,” “surprising,” or “shocking.” After all, in the United States we consume a staggering amount of meat: more than 220 pounds per person per year on average. ...

I think that people on farms tend to have a much more pragmatic view, as well as a more fearless response, to death. And I mean death of people/family/pets and animals. Less emotional. Because we have to see it all the time. So we do know that there are good way and bad ways to die. Just because something is dying -in order to feed us- doesnt ... Read Moremean it is a bad thing. We dont only exist "merely to consume", we also exist to mate, procreate and enjoy life.

Trust me, there are humane and inhumane ways to slaughter animals. Death is death. While alive, the animals and mankind as well, should be given every opportunity to celebrate life. LIke i have said before, I wouldnt mind coming back as one of my own animals. They have ONE bad day. And they never have to remember it. Thats a pretty wonderful way to live a life.

Temple Grandid did just writie a book on "creating the best life for animals". It is titled, "Animals Make Us Human" and covers the needs of not only livestock, but dogs, cats and horses as well. I think it is in published form now, my sis got me an advanced reading copy. I had a hard time getting thru the descriptions of factory farming- which is pretty horrible and graphic.
