Description
A brand new production of the Broadway musical "The Light in the Piazza" by Adam Guettel will be presented at the 2009 IU Summer Music Festival in Bloomington, Indiana, July 31, August 1, 7, and 8. Performances of this Tony Award-winning show will take place in the Musical Arts Center at 8pm, with Opera Insights (introduction to the musical) at 7pm.
The celebrated musical will be directed by IU's Vincent Liotta, with music direction from Broadway conductor Dan Riddle, who conducted some of the Broadway performances. The new set and costume designs are by C. David Higgins, with lighting designs by Barry Steele.
The show is full of gorgeous melodies and tells the story of a young American tourist, Clara, who meets and falls in love with a young Italian in Florence in 1953. Clara's mother tries to keep them apart. Eventually, her mother reveals the secret explaining why.
With passions that overflow, this musical is fast becoming one of the most successful shows in the past few decades.
