Description

A day of events is being held at The Collection on Thursday 6 August to celebrate the birthday of Lincolnshire’s most famous poet. Alfred Lord Tennyson would have been two-hundred years old that day.

2009 has seen a whole year of celebrations marking the bicentenary of the great poet’s birth, with groups and venues all over Lincolnshire taking part. The Collection has played host to several of these events, including the impressive Tennyson Transformed exhibition.

On Tennyson’s birthday, The Collection will be starting the celebrations with a family event where children can take part in poetry-related activities, while parents listen to extracts of Tennyson’s work. This free event, also allows visitors to look around the Tennyson Transformed exhibition and get up close and personal with some of the poet’s personal possessions. The day is split into three sessions: 10 to 11am, 11.15 to 12.15 and 2 to 3pm.

The evening will have a showing of the WAG Screen Film The Lady of Shallot and a special opening of the Tennyson Transformed exhibition. This will be accompanied by a buffet and a series of poetry readings.

Grace Timmins, Collections Officer at the Tennyson Research Centre said:

“Tennyson’s birthday is a very special event that we hope many people will come along to The Collection and enjoy.”

“If you have not experienced the Tennyson Transformed so far, this would be the ideal opportunity come and see it.”

The evening event is sponsored by the Co-Op and is open from 6pm until 9pm. Tickets cost £2.50 per person and can be booked by phoning The Collection on 550990, or bought in person from The Collection's Reception Desk.
