Description
The last Friday of every month hundreds of Chicagoans gather in Daley Plaza for Critical Mass (http://chicagocriticalmass.org/about). While most noted as being a sort of controlled chaos for avid bicyclists, Critical Mass has developed as a spontaneous community. Friends that you see once a month and share an unforgettable ride with. In theory the Mass is apolitical, but many people are driven to become part of it for their own reasons such as sharing the road, advocating that motorists be more aware and alert of riders and pedestrians, and advocating alternative modes of transportation. Critical Mass has been supportive of many causes. As long as you have wheels you have been welcome; they are the common uniting theme. There is one group, however, that is underrepresented in Critical Mass who share many of the same problems and concerns with cyclists in this city as well as fight unique challenges ... wheelchair users. Imagine how amazing it would be for us all to set out en masse together!
OUR HOPE: is to spread the word about this initiative to people with and without disabilities to support and bring further visibility to disability-related issues.
OUR MESSAGE: is simply one involvement, but that does not mean that you can't come with your own individual message. So wear t-shirts and bring signs!
The DSSC can help provide some resources for where people can find equipment such as handcycles. If you need a handcycle please get in touch with us as soon as possible as we have limited resources. If you don’t get in touch with us then we cannot guarantee you any equipment.
What can you do to help?
1. Join the Mass on Friday, September 25th
2. Do you know any resources you think we should add to our lists!
3. Is there any place you want to ride by?
4. Do you know someone who could help us take photos of the event?
What can cyclists do to help?
1. Support us in the September Critical Mass and help get the word out!
2. The Golden Rule: We ask only that you be as considerate of wheelchair users involved as you wish cars were of cyclists!
3. Do you know anyone that might be willing to donate a vehicle or has space for additional riders?
4. Do you know someone who could help us take photos of the event?
