Le 61 présente, du 20 octobre au 1er novembre 2009, la revue ‘dispatches’, avec une exposition réunissant les photographes des cinq premiers numéros de ‘dispatches’: Antonin Kratochvil, Yuri Kozyrev, Seamus Murphy, Gary Knight, Philip Blenkinsop.
Vernissage mardi 20 octobre à partir de 19h, et discussion avec Mort Rosenblum, co-directeur de ‘dispatches’.

‘dispatches’ a pour objectif de contribuer à comprendre le monde du XXIe siècle, alors que les ressources s’amenuisent et que la capacité de l’homme à infliger des dégâts se développe à un rythme atroce. Il n’existe aucune solution, seulement des directions prometteuses. Chaque trimestre, ‘dispatches’ pointe un sujet crucial pour aller au-delà du « quoi ? » et du « qui ? » et pour atteindre les plus cruciaux « pourquoi ? » et « qu’est-il possible de faire ? »
Le photographe Gary Knight et le reporter Mort Rosenblum ont conçu l’idée de dispatches alors qu’ils couvraient les principales histoires de la planète pour des médias traditionnels. Simba Gill, un entrepreneur en biochimie avec une conscience politique, les a rejoint. Ensemble ils ont fondé ‘dispatches’ d’une poignée de mains sur le bateau de Rosenblum à Paris, et ont lancé la revue au champagne à Angkor.
Auteurs et photographes travaillent à rendre compte de la réalité dans pression éditoriale ni contrainte commerciale. ‘dispatches’ veut provoquer la curiosité, inspirer la discussion, et influer sur le changement. Avec une approche et un design nouveau, la revue veut s’adresser au plus grand nombre. Mais en restant enracinée dans une forte intégrité journalistique.
In America, le premier numéro, a donné le ton. Muzamil Jaleel, un reporter cachemiri à l’habileté éclatante, a traversé le pays en « Borat-pour-de-vrai ». Antonin Kratochvil a photographié cette Amérique qu’il connaît tant. Paul Theroux et Samantha Power ont expliqué pourquoi les Américains méconnaissent souvent les réalités du monde.
Beyond Iraq a montré avec éclat l’impact global d’une guerre absurde. On Russia a dépeint la première puissance énergétique mondiale. Out of Poverty a montré les inégalités croissantes qui nous menacent tous, pauvres et riches. Et maintenant Endgame raconte que ce changement climatique est en fait bien plus que climatique.

‘dispatches’ aims to help meet a desperate need in a 21st-century world that can barely keep up with itself. As resources dwindle fast, human ability to wreak havoc develops at a harrowing pace. There are no solutions, only promising directions. Each quarter, we focus on a single critical subject to reach beyond what and who to the more crucial why and what can be done?
Photographer Gary Knight and reporter Mort Rosenblum conceived the idea while trying to cover major stories within the restraints of “mainstream media.” Simba Gill, a biochemist-entrepreneur with a conscience, joined in. dispatches was founded with a handshake on Rosenblum’s boat in Paris and launched with Champagne at Angkor Wat.
Writers and photographers get up close to reflect reality without editorial pressures or commercial constraints. Fresh reporting is fit into content and a historical continuum. We seek to spark curiosity, inspire discussion, and affect change. With fresh design and approach, we aim for wide appeal. But we are rooted in journalistic integrity, credibility, and accountability.
In America, our first issue, set the tone. Muzamil Jaleel, a Kashmiri reporter of dazzling skill, toured the country as a Borat-for-real. Antonin Kratochvil photographed an America he knows well. Paul Theroux and Samantha Power explained why Americans often miss world realities.
