CHECK OUT THE PHOTOS SECTION FOR LAYOUT OF SQUARE + PLANS FOR THE EVENT:

A silent Candle-lit vigil against All Hate-Crime in the Heart of London.

Trafalgar Square 8pm to 10pm Friday 30th October 2009

To show the world that this criminal behaviour is unacceptable here.

To stand shoulder to shoulder to stop this happening again.

If you can't make it on Friday 30th October then join us in spirit and share your thoughts and prayers for Ian Baynham, his family, friends and work colleagues by writing on the event wall below.

We will also be thinking about James Parkes who was recently attacked in Liverpool and fully support the candle-lit vigil that they are organising on Sunday 1st November (see facebook groups for more details). We wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Where ever you are - gather together and organise your own vigils. Light candles of hope and help us spread the word. Afterwards - post a photo of your candle tagged with the names of those who gather with you on your own profiles and on the facebook group 17-23-30 as well.

This is a global event - some are evening calling it the First International Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Hate-Crime.

WE ARE ASKING ALL VENUES TO PARTICIPATE - and if they don't - then we are asking all customers to step outside at 9pm and light a candle of hope and join us in the 2 minute silence.

Follow the link below to "In Memory of Ian Baynham" a group set up by his friends.

Final Update: 30th October 2009 11:00

We have had the most amazing response from the community and beyond to this vigil, with over 21,000 people being directly contacted through facebook alone - and thousands more passing the message on through other social networks and off-line groups too.

People are lighting candles of hope around the world.

There are so many good people to thank and we will be adding a list of names and organisations to this page after the event.

We have had so many messages of support from across the political spectrum - and I am sure that many more will pour in afterwards. We are moving forward with cross-party politcal support to put an end to hate-crime. The political world is changing - even President Obama has recently signed in new anti-hate crime legislation in the United States and this needs to be applauded.

Stuart Milk - Harvey Milk's Nephew, who was 17 years old when his uncle was assassinated has written to us too - and his letter will be read out at the vigil.

This has all been organised at such short notice - but over the last two weeks we have held meetings, set up working groups, been out leafleting across London (especially in Brixton, Brick Lane and Soho), been featured in various news reports, radio shows and on YouTube. Designers have created images and video clips for us to use, and many people have made donations to help cover the cost of this event.

There will be many voices that still go unheard tonight, we have attempted to be as inclusive as we can at such short notice, and whilst operating on a shoe-string budget. We pledge to be more inclusive as this campaign continues. You are our eyes and ears, so it is a shared responsibility for us all to look out for those who need help and listen to those who need support.

We still need more volunteers on the night - join the "vigil - stewards" group on facebook and go to the Steward Control Point in the Square when you arrive. Come early for the stewards briefing.

If people need support during the event speak to the stewards available who will be able to give directions - we have a medic on-site, and support volunteers. The London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard will also be present, Galop will be doing outreach work, LGBT Police Liaison Officers will be present. Everyone working together - to offer help and advice.

Self-Reporting Forms and information on how to report Hate-Crime will be available from the police van outside the National Gallery- It's important that we all take this opportunity to pick up this information and have it at hand should we need it. It's a sad reflection that 1 in 5 people have experience hate-crime and that reported incidents have risen by almost 20%. A lot still goes un-reported but we need to change this.

Remember if you don't want to talk to the police you can contact the switchboard 02078376768, or Galop's Shoutline 02077042040 in total confidence.

This vigil is not the end, it is a fresh beginning for us all to come forward and do something positive together. It's time to put aside our own differences and create that better tomorrow that we all have dreamt about.

17-24-30 will continue to be an on-line facebook group, but we aim to move forward and to become an organisation that strives

1) To bring people together
2) To support those who have been attacked
3) To stand against Hate-crime
4) To develop our communities for the benefit of all.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT
