Twin Cities area runners often bemoan the lack of high quality longer races in the metro area. While it seems like there are many 5Ks, it’s often hard to find a 10 mile or a half marathon without a long drive.

Well runners, our wishes have been fulfilled! The inaugural event, the Downtown Half Marathon, 10 mile, 5k and 5-K9 has arrived. Starting and finishing at the Depot in downtown Minneapolis, the Downtown Half features the convenience and excitement of the downtown setting, and also the beauty of the Mississippi River, Boom Island, Nicollet Island and Main Street. Runners will cross the Mississippi on the historic Stone Arch Bridge, and take in all the character and natural beauty of the riverfront.

There will be plenty of post-race fun, with live entertainment, and beer available for purchase at the Depot. I am fired up about the 5-K9, which I will be running with my dog Sierra, a husky/lab mix who dominated the Polar Dash 5-K9. She and my other two dogs, Hudson and Charlie, run with me just about every day. Hudson tends to get distracted by lots of other dogs, so he’ll probably stay home. However, I may bring out Charlie for his first race. He is just a year old, but he loves running with the pack!

Come to think of it, who doesn’t love running with the pack? Isn’t that what road races and events like the Downtown Half are all about?
