Description
Johannesburg will enjoy a mini festival of acoustic music this coming week! Cape Town-based singer-songwriter Ian Henderson is on a national tour promoting his recent release ‘Superglue’ and will join Laurie Levine, Paul E Flynn & Wendy New at Tanz Cafe.
Ian Henderson is riding a wave of success with the release of his second solo album, ‘Superglue’ – the follow-up to 2003’s SAMA-nominated ‘Freefall’ – which was recorded in Scandinavia and South Africa under the guidance of Swedish producer Ola Sonmark. He has two singles on rotation on national stations, and two music videos on national and satellite TV stations. He has recently led a highly successful collaborative series of acoustic artists in Cape Town called ‘The Song’s the Thing’, and will shortly be leaving for a two-month playing stint in Buenos Aires. European touring is in the pipeline for 2010.
2007 SAMA-nominee Laurie Levine is fast building a reputation as an artist with a fresh approach and unique sound. A prolific songwriter with a jazzy, soulful voice, Laurie’s debut album, Unspoken, draws on personal tales of longing and hope. Laurie recently performed at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. She has also performed at the famous CBGB’s in New York and at the Forum in London, where she opened for Rodriguez. Her unique songwriting and mature vocal talent has earned her national radio play and performance slots at some of South Africa’s premier music events and festivals.
Ten years on from seminal album ‘sand.man.sky’, Paul E Flynn continues to roam the road less travelled. Fresh from an Irish sabbatical, SA music’s original outsider shows off his street credentials on his first solo album ‘Fields’. Until now, Flynn’s songwriting has been exclusively platformed within the context of pioneering SA rock band Sugardrive. Away from Sugardrive, Flynn has performed shows with Arno Carstens, Craig Hinds (Watershed), Josie Field and Albert Frost, and regularly gigs with Wonderboom’s Cito in their band Absinthe.
Singer-songwriter Wendy New has become a feature of the local music scene with a sound all her own. Born and living in South Africa, she was resident musician in New York City for many years. She has been playing guitar and writing songs since she was 8 years old. Her songs are a unique synthesis of pop, world, blues and folk/rock genres while lyric images span the globe with sweet melodies and kickarse grooves.
