Description

The Campaign for a poverty-free Ontario is province-wide campaign taken on by students, labor unions, activists, social justice and anti-poverty groups. Students will be focusing on the the Drop Fees for a Poverty-Free Ontario part of the campaign while working alongside with our coalition partners in the public sector to support a living wage for all Ontarians, increase funding for and access to high quality, affordable housing, increase funding for and access to high quality, public childcare, increase funding for and support for a high quality, public healthcare system, demand status and services for all people living in Ontario and encourage the Ontario government to pledge multi-year funding for new poverty reduction measures.

Students at the University of Toronto- St. George have been mobilizing for the last few months. We hold regular workshops and coalition meetings every Monday in the Sidney Smith lobby at 4:15pm to discuss the issues of poverty and unaffordable tuition fees and also what we are doing to fight against poverty and tuition fees.

We have collected 10926 petition postcards ,directed to Premier Mcguinty urging him to increase funding into universities and colleges to make them accessible, from our campus alone. Students across the province have collected over 90,000 postcards.

Our next step is to mobilize thousands of Ontarions in a province wide Day of Action for a poverty-free Ontario on November 5th, 2009.

Please join the UofT contingent at Sid Smith on November 5th!
