Description
The federal government's plans for digital prohibition have been put on hold during the summer break, but they will be back in the fall. Meanwhile, Canada is negotiating the ACTA treaty secretly with other countries. Reports are that this will allow (even require) police and border officials to search our laptops and music players in search of music and videos. They would be able to determine, at their discretion, what was legal and what not.
Vancouver Fair Copyright meets this Thursday, July 3 to plan our opposition to Bill C-61 and ACTA.
Please RSVP if you plan to come. The venue can accommodate no more than 60 people due to the fire code, and there are some people who RSVPd but aren't listed here. If the number approaches 50, we might not have any more space.
NEW LOCATION: With 20+ confirmed attendees and twice that number who might come, we are too many for a cafe. I have therefore booked a room at Bonsor Recreation Complex, which is about a 10 minute walk from Metrotown Skytrain station. The room can accommodate up to 60 people. If you want refreshments, I recommend that you bring something (water, pop, etc.) with you.
Directions for Skytrain:
Get off at Metrotown station. Walk east (towards New West) along Skytrain for a few blocks, until you reach a crosswalk (not a traffic light) with a stand of firs on the other side. A sign for Bonsor Park is there on the opposite corner. Cross the street. On the other side of the trees is a parking lot and a building. Go around to the right side of the building (the side away from the street).
Directions by car:
You can get onto Bonsor Ave by turning north from Central Blvd (parallel to Kinsway behind Metrotown) or by turning west onto Bennett St. from Nelson Ave (between Kinsway and Imperial). (Bennett turns into Bonsor.) The Bonsor Recreation Centre is on the southeast side of the street, with parking lots on either side of it.
When you get to the building:
The entrance is on the far side of the building from the street, under a big blue arch thing. There is a front desk there, a whiteboard listing for "Vancouver Fair Copyright". To the left of the desk stairs zig-zap up and down. Go up the stairs. Turn left at the top into a short corridor. Turn right, and the door is on your right. It is in Multipurpose Room #1. Please write your name, email, and city or riding (if you know it) on the sign-in sheet.
