The Southern Animal Rescue Association (SARA) maintains a shelter near Seguin. It’s a wonderful place where hundreds of unwanted dogs dozens of cats, pigs, chickens, and even some Longhorns, mules, and goats get to live out there natural lives with as much freedom and care as possible.

As you can imagine they are in a near constant state of being overwhelmed and can use all the help they can get, both time and money. What can you do as a volunteer?, well Xmas day when I was up there, I fed chickens, herded baby piglets, cleaned poop from the kennels, distributed treats and toys to the dogs, groomed and brushed, and played with the puppies to help keep them socialized. On other days they may need help installing pens, transporting animals for adoption days, administering meds it goes on and on.

It’s a full day affair since its about 1.5 hour drive from Austin, but it’s a fun and rewarding day. Plan to leave Austin around 8:30 AM to get to the sanctuary by 10 PM, we will work until about 2:30 before heading back to Austin, expecting to be back around 4:00 PM.

Please bring plenty of water, a light lunch ( we will take a break around noon), and wear clothes suitable for working on a farm. That means boots that are easy to clean the bottems of :-), jeans, sweatshirt, etc, that you wear for yard work. Work gloves are a good idea if you have them. I'll try to bring a few extra pairs.

Children 7 and older are welcome as long as they have a responsible parent who is a club member with them. It be a great adventure for them.
