Description
***THIS EVENT WAS ORIGINALLY SET FOR TUESDAY (9/16). IT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR THURSDAY (9/18) DUE TO RAIN***
The University is attempting to move the existing UNC housekeeping staff to a seven-day coverage schedule, meaning that housekeepers would be cleaning the dorms everyday of the week. Throughout the process of negotiation on this issue, the University has ignored the requests of housekeepers for additional staff, overtime pay for weekend work or shift differential, and a consistent Monday through Friday schedule of forty hours per week. Many housekeepers are single parents, have second jobs, and rely on public transportation to get to and from work. It would be an undue hardship on most workers to adjust their weekend schedule to accommodate for childcare and transportation.
The week of September 14-20 is "International Housekeepers Appreciation Week." The University has a strange way of showing their "appreciation" for the work of the housekeepers, by cutting their loses from overspending on big building projects and mismanagement off the backs of the housekeepers.
Come out and show some real appreciation for the housekeepers in the Pit at 12 noon on Thursday, September 18. Several housekeepers will speak at the beginning of the rally to update folks on what's going on, and then we'll march in support with the housekeepers as they bring their demands to administrators and Chancellor Thorp in South Building.
