Description
Up in the Northwood of Superior, we've had a great friend in the legislature in Frank Boyle. Frank's been a staunch progressive and major ally of pro-labor, pro-education leaders in Wisconsin. But he's retiring and whomever wins the Democratic primary there will win the seat in this heavily Democratic area.
There are multiple candidates, but our union has endorsed the progressive candidate, Nick Milroy. His wife and his parents have been members of our union for years and he's running on an unabashedly progressive, pro-labor, pro-education platform.
AFT-Wisconsin and our brothers and sisters in the Superior Federation of Teachers have asked us to help win this primary for Nick and progressive politics. So we'll be calling into the Northwoods to speak directly with the 800 or so AFT members about why Nick is the right choice for this legislative seat.
This will be our first real test of how well we can organize around building a pro-labor, pro-education majority in the state legislature.
After 11 days spent by the TAA identifying and building support for Nick Milroy amongst AFT-Wisconsin members in the district, we'll need to get out that labor vote! The final 72 hours of an election are the most critical period to win, and if we can re-contact all of the Milroy supporters in that time, we'll have nailed what we need to do to win this primary for a progressive.
We're asking folks to fill call shifts (Never called before? No worries - we'll be happy to train you and show you the ropes.) on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday - so RSVP today so that we know who's coming and how many more slots we need to fill.
This is a great chance to a) get a progressive in the Assembly b) build our political clout and c) engage in some fun political activism with fellow union brothers and sisters.
