Retail/Commercial is a new site specific installation positioned in a 4,300sf vacant retail storefront within the Rainier Square shopping center. Located at the intersection of 5th and Union in downtown Seattle, the site was chosen for its proximity to the thriving e retail environment with adjacency to Seattle’s most exclusive shopping district along 5th Avenue.

The project examines the spatial configurations of three retail environments overlaid within the shell of an existing fourth. With the exception of a small quantity of new materials for wall construction, the entirety of the physical material for this exhibition was sourced from “going out of business” liquidation sales that occurred during the month of January, 2009, most from within two blocks of the site.

Viewers will see that there is no merchandise for sale and nothing on display other than the empty armatures, casework and architecture that supports the selling of goods.
