Description

Sheridan Thayer's film about Ken Campbell’s life and work is a wonderful, invaluable testament to one of the truly great and inspirational figures in our post-War culture. The Barking lad was barking mad in the best possible way and made of his life and capers one of the most joyful and celebratory bodies of theatre work in our times, from “Road Show” days to “The Warp” and beyond, to mounds of monologue and improvisation. As Sheridan shows, and you can see, Campbell was Puck, hobgoblin, the Ancient Mariner and Pied Piper all in one: nobody else like him! - Michael Coveney

Having discovered Ken Campbell’s Roadshow upstairs at the Royal Court Theatre in the late sixties, I became an instant fan. They were brilliant performers: fresh, funny and different every time. I went back again and again. Years later, when I was working with Bob Hoskins, he told me that he and Ken would laugh at me: “McDowell’s in again” ... Ken had a weird but wonderful take on life. He was an extraordinary talent. Those that knew him loved him. This remarkable documentary, “Antic Visionary”, captures his life and the adventures he had. Do see it! - Malcolm McDowell

Ken Campbell's impact on theatre of recent decades was unique: his sudden death last August left a hole in the British fringe. Award-winning performers, from Jim Broadbent to Nina Conti, queued up by his coffin to tell how he had literally changed their lives. His marathon science fiction shows made the Guinness Book of Records. Millions beyond the fringe knew him as Fred Johnson, long-suffereing neighbour of Alf Garnett. This screening of Antic Visionary is a rare opportunity to observe close up the modus operandi of the fabled comedian, director and monologist extraordinaire.

The evening will be hosted by Mark Borkowski and introduced by special guests.
