Description

League of Women Voters and Downtown Topeka, Inc.
join in support of the Campaign to Fix Our Streets

TOPEKA, KS – The League of Women Voters will join Downtown Topeka, Inc. and the Committee to Fix Our Streets in an a media conference in Downtown Topeka on Monday, March 23rd at 1:00 PM. The groups will announce their mutual support for the Vote Yes to Fix Our Streets campaign to repair city roads. The media conference will take place on the west side of the 300 block of South Kansas Avenue. Fix Our Streets is an initiative designed to raise awareness of the dire condition of Topeka's infrastructure, and to promote action toward their maintenance and repair.

Susan Mahoney, of Downtown Topeka, Inc. expressed how important this initiative is for the continued improvement of our community. "If we as a community want to attract and retain good employees and young families, we must be proactive and progressive. Broken streets, sidewalks and curbs do not give the impression that as a city, we want them here. Now is the time we can change that impression and move our city forward."

She went on to describe why Downtown Topeka, Inc. is so enthusiastic about the success of the Vote Yes To Fix Our Streets campaign. "Downtown welcomes 35,000 people each day to work at some of the city's largest employers and at some the city's best locally owned businesses. We also host some of the community's largest celebrations. In this regard, it is vital that our streets, curbs, medians and sidewalks be fixed to showcase the city in its best possible light."

Mahoney will be joined on Monday by Georgia Sandlin of the League of Women Voters. The League is also working to raise awareness of the Campaign to Fix Our Streets. “From its beginning in 1920 the League has spoken out for participation in our government. This election is an opportunity for the citizens to speak up for the quality of life, in the environment they want, for themselves and their families.”

In the event of rain, the press conference will take place in the Downtown Topeka, Inc. office, located at 515 South Kansas Avenue.
