Description

PLEASE TAKE ONE MINUTE TO READ CAREFULLY!!!

OK everyone who wants to DO something to help, here is an idea that a few of us have discussed in the earlier thread 'An idea for how those of us outside Burma can help' (Pls see http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=24957770200&topic=3064 if you want the reasonings behind it.).

We think it's a good idea to focus protest on what we see as the strongest leveraging power (China), on their weakest point (Beijing 2008 Olympics).

So, on Monday, 1 October, at 1200 your local time, please send emails of protest to these email addresses listed on the Beijing Olympics Contact Us website (http://en.beijing2008.cn/bocog/contactus/):

They are the email adds for: General Office, International Relations, Media and Communications, Marketing, Media Operations, and the Ticketing Centre.

This link is for local ticket offices if you want to email them too:

And let's take our cue from the protesters in Beijing. We want China to use its influence to:

a) Pressure the junta not to use force on the demonstrators
b) Pressure the junta to agree to talks on reconciliation

Make sure they can't filter out your message by subject line by using something straightforward like the word 'tickets' in it. And also, please include a picture or two or a rather large size to collaps their mail servers!!!

If you want to do more, please also email or write to the following people:

Russian President Vladimir Putin at website:
http://www.kremlin.ru/eng/articles/send_letter_adm.shtml

or address (apparently if you want a personal response):
4, Staraya Square, Moscow, 103132

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at website:
http://pmindia.nic.in/write.htm

ASEAN Secretariat and Office of Secretary-General emails:
termsak@aseansec.org, public@aseansec.org

Write to Gordon Brown to boycott the olympics at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Boycott-Olympics/

It's up to you what you want to say of course but I would point out that by Asian countries' standards, what's been said by nearly all the main players - China, ASEAN, Japan etc - is actually pretty strong criticism in context. So you know, you may want to voice support for what they are doing as well, just ask for more. Praise as incentive works much better than threats.

Would also add: We are not setting out to crash the site - hence asking everyone to email at 1200 their local time than at a particular time, as we believe in legitimate protest, rather than not-so-legitimate denial of service attacks. But there is also an interesting message on the board in regards to this.

REMEMBER everyone, if you can't send at noon on monday send whenever and wherever you can. This doesn't have to be a one time protest. We can keep up the pressure, keep protesting until they listen. They can't filter these messages out. If they get thousands of these, it'll make them impossible to do admin for their olympics and *hopefully* force them to choose between their games and the generals. --Rahiem Strayhorn

Lastly: here is an example of a message fr the Olympics addresses though we strongly recommend you write your own:

Subject: tickets for the Olympics

Dear Sirs,

I am very interested in purchasing tickets to some of the events at next year's olympic games.

However I cannot, in good conscience, attend the Bejing Olympics unless your government uses its influence to improve the political situation in Burma. China has substantial economic interests in the country, provides large amounts of economic aid, and invests heavily in infrastructure projects there. Additionally, your government provides extensive logistical support to Burma’s military government. All this make China uniquely placed to influence it.

The people of Burma have, in a very peaceful manner, insisted that their rights be respected. I ask no more of your government than that it cease its support for the current regime, and encourage a dialogue with the democratically elected representatives of the Burmese nation.

I, the Burmese people, and the world would be grateful for your assistance in this matter. Your courage will go a long way towards making the 2008 Olympics a success.

With sincere thanks,

-Thank you Rahiem Strayhorn for this wonderful idea and Tse Yin Lee for following it up!
