Description
Exciting programs await us for the Smith Scholar in Residence weekend,May 22-24, 2009. Our 2009 scholar,Dr.Vanessa Ochs, a professor of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia, will explore the field of new Jewish ritual.
The recipient of a writing fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, she has written several books, including Words on Fire, Sarah Laughed and Inventing Jewish Ritual including dozens of articles for national newspapers and magazines. She lives in Charlottesville, Virginia.
She will speak at a congregational dinner on Friday night,May 22; during and after Shabbat morning services on Saturday,May 23; and at a brunch following the Sunday morning minyan on May 24. Be sure to mark your calendar now and save those dates.
In keeping with our Conservative tradition,Dr.Ochs will begin with text studies focused on how new rituals were conceived by communities or individuals in the past and how our sages promoted or discouraged such practices.
Further discussions will analyze modern case studies. One of Dr.Ochs’ presentations will include a hands on opportunity to discuss our own ritual objects, their meaning, and how we use them to both carry tradition and meet the needs of our current cultural imperatives.
The Smith family intends that the Scholar in Residence weekend not only provides our community with a weekend of learning, but also expands adult learning through a broader portion of our year together. In keeping with that intention, the Limud La’ad committee will offer a series of workshops in the weeks preceding Dr.Ochs’ appearance that will help prepare us for her presentations and deepen our learning. We formally begin May 2, after Shabbat services, with a panel of artists who will discuss how and why they create Jewish ritual objects. Then, in May, Limud La’ad will sponsor a series for Monday Night Learning similar to those we offered with great success last fall. One series will focus on creating ritual objects for your Jewish home.Another will explore Dr.Ochs’ work, Inventing Jewish Ritual. And don’t forget to mark your May calendars for these wonderful delights.
