Description

Do you or your organization members find that labels about your ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, or other characteristics are sometimes applied unthinkingly by other members of the campus community? If so, we'd like to invite you to help increase awareness among other leaders & student groups member, as we work to educate the rest of the IU campus, about the labels they (mis)apply to your group at our Respect Identity – Avoid the Labels event on Wednesday, April 1st @ 6:00pm in the Georgian Room in the IMU.

We are writing on behalf of the Teachable Moments Committee of the Commission on Multicultural Understanding, a university-wide commission charged with furthering diversity and respect on campus.

Respect Identity – Avoid the Labels is not a lecture or a talk. Rather, we will facilitate students teaching other students about what labels bug or even harm them and why, while sharing methods for redirecting harmful labels into valuable expressions of respect. This is a chance for you to speak for yourself and interact with people and groups you might not otherwise.

Light snacks will be served.

Please e-mail (smtoney@indiana.edu or rlriall@indiana.edu) if you have questions or to RSVP. RSVPs are encouraged so that we can plan appropriately. We will reply with a brief form for you to fill out that will help us plan.
