Description

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are within the fire-prone and fire-adapted Sierra Nevada. Explore the relationship that people have had with fire here starting with Native American practices, the days of fire exclusion, the historically significant research and prescribed and managed fires in the 1960's, and through to the program today. Consider the range of factors that influence fire management today and into the future, including air quality and smoke, public perceptions of fire, and global climate change. Walks through burned and unburned areas in the Giant Forest will illuminate the ecological role that fire plays in this ecosystem.
