Description
On Tuesday, June 9 Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer announced that there was no consensus for moving forward with the current DC Voting Rights Legislation with the Ensign amendments eliminating the District's gun control laws attached. So, while the deal has been taken off the table for the moment, the dilemma still remains.
Hoyer stated in the Washington Post "'It's clear that the [gun rights amendment] has a majority of votes,' Hoyer said, calling it 'difficult if not impossible' to even consider the voting rights measure on the House floor without the gun amendment."
Is there a way around this apparent political reality? How do we get a better deal? Indeed, what now for DC Voting Rights? Congressional leaders are blaming local leaders, local leaders are blaming the NRA. As the continuing struggle enters a new phase, join us and our panel to deconstruct what went wrong this time, what needs to be done in the future, and how best to achieve voting rights for DC in the current political climate.
Featured speakers include: Michael A. Brown, DC Council, At-Large (Ind.), Keshini Ladduwahetty, DC for Democracy, Elissa Froman, National Council of Jewish Women, Joe Sternlieb from DC Vote
