UPDATE: I would like to do a reading of the names of individuals that are the fallen victims of hate crimes. If you have a name or names that you wish to add to this list, please contact me as soon as possible.
**********
Seaman August Provost was violently murdered on base at Camp Pendleton, California early last week. Investigators within the military have stated that the crime was not based on gay bias. However, current publicly known information indicates that in the prior months, Seaman Provost was repeatedly subjected to harassment by fellow officers because of his sexuality with no recourse for resolving that harassment due to the military's 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' policy which prevents LGBT people from serving openly in the armed forces. Were he to have gone to his superiors with the harrassment, he would have been in violation of that policy by disclosing his sexuality resulting in his discharge from the military. While the investigation into Seaman Provost's death is continuing; at this writing his family maintains its position that his death was the result of a hate crime.
Funeral services for Seaman Provost will be held on Friday in Houston, Texas and funeral processions have been scheduled for Friday, July 10 in San Diego from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. A link will be posted on this page to that event if you are in closer proximity to that area and wish to take part in the vigil that will be held there.
Here in San Francisco we will honor all victims of hate crimes with a candle light vigil at City Hall Friday night at 7:00 PM. We will stand in grief with Seaman Provost's family, his partner and the LGBT community as another of our brothers is laid to rest.
This event is a show of solidarity and support. If you wish to bring signs, we ask that you create them with Seaman Provost's photograph or with the photograph of another individual victim of hate crime violence in this country.
At 7:15, we will honour all victims of hate crimes with sixty seconds of silence followed by candle lighting and a public discussion and sharing on this issue.
We hope that you are able to join us for this very important event.
