4 years after publication, Darwin had the Southern generals discussing evolution the night before Pickett's Charge. Well, at least they did in a great scene in the movie "Gettysburg," Look for the scene if you ever get a chance to see the movie. Great comic relief during a serious story.

Manuel Sebastian Lara Bisch While
some amount of polemicism is exchanged in the comments, I do like the
following quote: "While theories and viewpoints in conflict with the above do exist, their proponents constitute a very small minority. If we require unanimity before being confident, well, we can’t be sure the earth isn’t hollow either."

I read George Monbiot's article which expresses his frustration over the climate sceptics and says - There is no point in denying it: we're losing the climate debate.

I loved it. It was well done. They did cite a 500,000 year gap which will make my creation friends happy. They also talked about the change in the overall view of the environment which drove us to have large brains. The creationist will view that adjustment as a radical re-thought of the whole process. All of those hard working people digging in Africa.

Scientist Genie Scott has the last word in a debate over creationist Ray Comfort's take on Darwin.
Eric Strickland

Alas, creationists, who are committed to their dogma, are impervious to the evidence. They deny that it exists, and when faced with the mountains of research that has accumulated simply dismiss it as a bunch of lies. They project all of their own worst traits back onto scientists. Trying to persuade them is ‘like talking to a table.’ Actually worse, since tables can’t talk back.

According to Gallup Poll results that were released on the eve of Darwin’s 200th birthday, 39% of Americans believe that evolution is true, while 25% do not believe it.
http://www.gallup.com/poll/114544/Darwin-Birthday-Believe-Evolution.aspx
In a way, that’s good news. 56% more people believe that evolution is true than disbelieve it. ... Read More

Our efforts should probably be aimed more at the 36% who have “no opinion either way.” Getting more of those who are actually persuadable on board would make it more difficult for creationists to get themselves elected to school boards and state legislatures. It would also mean that governors and would be presidents such as Mike Huckabee and Bobby Jindal would be less likely to take a public stand on the side of ignorance.

No amount of name calling and highly charged rhetoric is going to change the minds of those who need the certitude of absolute truth, of all things in terms of black and white, with no shades of grey. In this regard, Dr. Scott seems to have found the right tone in her debate with Ray Comfort. It’s not really him she’s trying to convince, butt those in the 36% who still haven’t made up their minds.

While reading Scott's rebuttal to Comfort, it occurs to me that the fossil and genetic records and associated information and bibliographies would make for a fantastic "Google Earth" styled scalable presentation on evolutionary evidence.

FLASH, Part II: Note: the intial printing of Comfort's "edition" was missing the 4 chapters and Darwin's intro. (This was the edition Genie had when writing her post.) The second printing--the version likely to be distributed at colleges--restores all of Darwin's text. So that's an improve...ment...of sorts. But the pr...oblems with Comfort's intro remain! I always figured if people were going to attack a Darwin book, it would be Descent of Man. But it's good he restored all of Darwin's text. It might get some people to read it that hadn't thought much of it. Last month was Darwin month at my library and that may have sparked some interest in Darwin here.
