It’s been 2 years since „1st Last Will“, Excuse Me Moses’ debut album shot straight to 13 of the Austrian Top 40. And now they’re back – faster, better, stronger!
“Pole Shift”, the bands’ second album, consists of highly explosive blasts of energetic rock like the first single “Speed” or “Dogs With Bones” but also features lyrical moments like the second single “I Wonder” or “Couldn’t You Find Me“. Songs like “Wrong Dimension”, “Forever” and “You Don’t Need To Know” on the other hand showcase the bands ability to blend their trademark rock energy with subtle grooves and a slight penchant for grand gestures – not the only indication for the rapid development of bands style and creativity.
Singer Michael Paukner, guitarist Diz Schrödl, bass player Gerald Weichselbaum and drummer Martin Scheer selected the 13 album tracks from more than 40 songs they have been working on in the last months: “We are a real album-band, and when it comes to recording an album, we just can’t have fillers on it. Every song has to be a blast. Every song should be able to function as a single.” explains Paukee the approach to the bands’ recording sessions, which have been supervised by starproducer Alexander Kahr.
The lyrics on “Pole Shift” discuss love and longing, but also the quest for new grounds and above all are statements of originality and honesty – Paukee explains the song “Wrong Dimensions” as an example: “I once came across a horoscope which said that I would be seeing myself in the wrong dimension. And there’s a lot of truth in that, because you see yourself in a very special way – the way you want to be seen. But if you change your angle, take a step back, you will pretty sure something entirely different. Maybe even who you really are.”
The title „Pole Shift“ is inspired by Richard Dawkins’ bestselling work of criticism on religion, “The God Delusion”. Excuse Me Moses follow his lead and challenge established truths: “The north has absolutely no right to be placed on top of all maps. A globe has no top nor a bottom – we Europeans have always been taught that we would be the centre of the world, but that’s not true. We do not play any role in the endlessness of the universe.” Also the name of the band is a call for independent thinking and acting. Excuse Me Moses means to reflect and discover what’s right. Don’t walk in the valley with all the others, take to rocky road to the mountain top and see the whole picture. But the band won’t start a sermon with a wagging forefinger: “If there is a message in our songs, it’s LIVE! BE YOURSELF! Think for yourself and believe only what you yourself want to believe.”
