These are great posts, Amy! Thanks for sharing. I'm writing a book on using advertising and branding techniques to sell a greener lifestyle. It's based on the idea that in order for sustainable living to go mainstream, you have to sell it as a faster, easier, simpler (perhaps more fun? Thanks VW!) option than what else is out there. I don't think ... Read MoreThe Green Life (as I like to call it) will catch on until it gets in line with capitalism and is sold like a product.
Unfortunately, we live in a world where people are struggling just to feed their children. I'm sure everyone would choose to save the environment if they had the economic means to do so. Until that's the case, the sustainable lifestyle has to be sold as the best economic option.
One example - instead of telling people they need to change and stop buying bottled water (and thus adding plastic trash to the Gyre) - we need advertisements that show people that it's actually cheaper and quicker to use a Brita filter and use a Nalgene bottle. The tagline: Forget saving the planet - save a few bucks!
My two cents...
(PS - if you have more examples like the above - please post! I'm trying to hunt down as many successful ones as I can find! thanks..)
