How lovely, thank you. Thanks also for the past year's updates on what is going on in the animal kingdom, and for all your hard work. Even though I live in South Africa there is always some interesting items you give us to read and ponder on. Keep up the great work and best wishes for a wonderful 2010.

Eyes on Africa The world's largest underground lake is in Namibia and is known as the Dragon's Breath Lake. It is in the Otavi Mountains in north east Namibia. The lake was discovered in 1986, and its surface area is about two hectatres. The cave system containing the lake is home to a large population of bats, and their guano float...ing on the lake surface has produced a unique ecosystem.

Eyes on Africa The biggest great white shark on record was 23 feet (7 m) long. Great white sharks must swim constantly or they will sink. They have no gas filled swim bladder to keep them afloat like all bony fish do.

Romie - Although it is not the largest shark, the great white is the largest predatory shark. The largest shark known is the whale shark, which reaches lengths of 12 metres (almost 40 feet) or more. The smallest shark, the dwarf shark, is only 25 cm (10 inches) long.
