I am President-Elect of Humboldt Del Norte County Medical Society. Several months ago we polled our membership about health care reform. This was after inaugeration but before any action was taken in Congress. 75% of our members indicated support for "single payer" as the solution to what ails health care in the US and in California. When I ... Read Moreproposed to our executive committee that we send letter of support for AB 810 to our representatives in the State House I was told by one of the trustees of HOD and by then Vice Speaker of HOD that as a component of CMA we could not publicly express dissent and that we could only take that opinion to HOD. Apparently we liberals way up north are way more conservative than are the conservatives in LA.

Hal, I'm going to take your medical society's opinion with me as evidence when CAFP has it's Single Payer Task Force meeting in December. CAFP did an unscientific poll about 2 yrs ago and 60+ % were in favor of single payer. I don't think CAFP should take a yes or no stand on single payer, because the devil is in the details. But we can come up with principles that we can support and use to eval future single payer proposals. I'd love you to email me your ideas on this subject!

Hal Grotke Last week I got a new medical student. He had spent the first week of his rotation somewhere else but made the change because he wanted to see more variety. At the end of his first week with me he said, "there is no shortage of pathology here." Rural family medicine rocks!
