Seeing women's and feminist issues relegated to the "Styles" section of The New York Times is nothing new. And while I was glad to see students' rights and gender taken up in the NYT, presenting the continued ...

As we've noted briefly, last week soldiers in Guinea attacked unarmed civilians at a political demonstration in a stadium. Reports and cellphone camera photos of the attack have continued to surface, and today's New York Times has a horrifying account of what occurred in the stadium that day:

Rape is not an African problem; it is a GLOBAL problem. We ought to keep in mind that rape perpetrated by members of the military has a pretty ugly legacy in our own country.

This ad for Coopers Premium Light beer, created by a Singapore agency, is one of three. Get it? Because of the low alcohol content dudes won't have beer goggles and end up hooking with an "ugly" woman! Charming, no?

I agree that the ad in that photo is sexist in many, many ways. I don't think the woman pictured in the ad is ugly but the ad's women-as-objects-attitude is definitely sexist.

Someone should do a revenge ad, where at the end you get to see what the pissed bloke looks like...Not pretty. Some men have a tendency to think they look like Daniel Craig after a few beers, they do not...! It's hard to spot an ad featuring a woman that isn't sexist if you ask me.

Excellent piece, I'm glad to see so many feminist blogs picking up on the problematic issues this spread raised. Here is what I posted on Feminist Peace Network, http://www.feministpeacenetwork.org/2009/08/24/memo-to-the-nyt-no-women-arent-the-problem-now-lets-talk-about-who-is-and-why/

I know I shouldn't be surprised by PETA's latest billboard campaign in Florida - after all, their brand of activism has proven to be sexist and racist time and time again - why not fat-shaming to boot? (Part of me hates posting this at all because it does just give PETA the attention that they want....

A new study presented at the American Sociological Association's annual meeting in San Francisco today shows that about 70% of Americans believe that women should take their husband's last names when they get married and 50% think it should be a legal requirement.* Say what?
