No problemo - That little iPhone app NumPad 2.0 from Edovia, would be great for Finale users. Especially those entering from a MacBook or whatever laptop without an extended numeric keypad.

Emily What's the difference between Finale and something like Cubase? Is Finale only for notation and playback?

what would be the best software to use if I was interested in experimenting with music composition (orchestral)?

Hi Emily,
A program like Cubase is a Digital Audio Workstation that can perform complex audio and MIDI recording/editing/etc. Finale is a score writing application which has some advanced playback options. If you are looking to do orchestral composition, Finale might be a good option for you.

You can see a comprehensive list of Finale's features here:

Ted Shure

Ted Shure Good day! I have Finale 2007. I have held off on upgrading. I plan on upgrading to 2010 but I wonder what major new features might be available in 2011? Thanks! Also, for creating midi files of choral parts for rehearsals, is there a program that is easier to do this using a midi based keyboard? Thanks!

Hi Ted. I won't be able to write about new features that are yet to be released (I also truthfully don't know what the engineers have up their sleeves yet). However, if you’re looking for something specific, post it right here on facebook and I’ll help you turn it into an official feature request.

As for your question regarding recording programs let’s see what our page fans would recommend. Tell us Ted, are you using a Mac or a Windows computer? -Beth

Hi Davison. Are you looking for big differences between Finale 2008 and Finale 2010? If so, you can always try the new Finale free for 30 days. http://www.finalemusic.com/Finale/Demo.aspx

If you write for percussion, you'll notice a percussion notation is a lot easier in Finale 2010. You'll also notice a multi-page view (new in 2009). Those are just two of my favorite new features:

Anyone else out there want to list their favorite new features since 2008 for Davison?

Jacob Hinson

Jacob Hinson I am having trouble with my percussion in Finale 2010. When I am writing a cymbal part on a one line staff, Finale 2010 doesn't give me the same sound of cymbals as 2009 did. I have not messed with percussion mapping at all. Is there an update of any kind that is supposed to fix this problem?

It didn't. They wanted me to send them a copy of the file that I was working on but I have completed that file already. It's with every file that I start. Something has been written wrong in the program.

Eddy Ghabach Is there any way to use oriental scales in finale printmusic? like bayat and rast?

Hi Eddy,
If those scales require a special key signature, unfortunately Finale would be the best option for that since you can configure custom non-western standard key signatures. PrintMusic does not have that functionality at this time.
