I have to agree with your view. As a member of St John who also holds an advanced amateur radio licence it amazes me that so much emphasis is put on theory and technical concepts. They hold little interest for most people and from my experience are poorly handled in training anyway. Much better spend the time learning how to use the equipment and gain true confidence.

I gave up on the powerpoint on the second session and it went so much better. The ppt contradicts the handouts which is confusing for me let alone the learners.

Unfortunately the password protection on the ppt prevents the trainer from changing the order or skipping sections without a lot of clicking backwards and forwards. I don't understand why it should be protected, it seams to go against the principles of learner centred teaching.

Instead I used various practical techniques including team based work and the whiteboard and then got the learners to get some proper hands on using the radios.... Read More

It's when you see the difference between death by powerpoint and learner centred teaching I realise how good some of the SJA training, and trainer training, actually is :-)
